Thank you @e-van-mama.bsky.social for your careful insights & endorsement. We need to pay attention to this data & do everything possible to turn around literacy, numeracy and graduation rates for all marginalized learners at the VSB. Vote OneCity Vancouver! @onecityvan.bsky.social

The rubber stamping of VSB management decisions needs to end, and Oct. 17th is the day to make that happen. 11/11 Source of data: media.vsb.bc.ca/media/Defaul...

I wish I could vote for Jennifer Reddy one more time, but instead I will wish her a restful break and instead vote for others on the @onecityvan.bsky.social slate who I trust will equally put kids at the heart of all decisions with Jen’s experience in the background still supporting them. 10/X

Its also why the first two votes on my ballot will go to Sherry Breashers (#321) of One City and Suzie Mah of COPE as I’ve seen both of these strong education advocates fight for kids in VSB over the past few years. 9/X

The majority of our current trustees have been rubber-stamping VSB budgets and plans with little input and oversight on issues that truly matter to families in our city and the futures of these students 8/X.

By voting for trustees who's purpose is truly to support our education system and not just using this upcoming election as a stepping stone to their political career ambitions your vote can make a difference. 7/X

While these scores alone are concerning, what is worse is the way that VSB staff in leadership positions report these conclusions out at Districts Board meetings, where results are sanitized into simplistic Power Points presented to Stakeholders with their own bad math interpretations: 6/X
Power Point slide showing improvements to Grade 4 and 7 literacy rates and Grade 10 numeracy rates; with decreasing scores for Grade 4 and Grade 7 numeracy; and stable Grade 10 literacy rates. There is a footnote about the sub-population scores being lower. The numbers used to create the VSB interpretation suggests they considered only the trend between the past two years (plus or munis) for this slide, rather than considering the 5 year trend which shows a much different conclusion than what I've summarized above.

Language scores are not much better and show drops of more than 10% over the past 5 years, with particularly low scores for indigenous students and students with disabilities: 5/X
FSA literacy scores for Grade 4 showing ~10% drops over the past 5 years for all students, with further breakdown of scores for sub-populations of students. Sub-population scores show even larger drops in scores for Students with disabilities, and scores much lower than the provincial averages for Indigenous students.

While FSA test are not perfect, they are at tool that districts are currently required to use to show how our kids are doing, and this year’s data does not look good - especially when it comes to math: 4/X
FSA math scores for Grade 4 Numeracy showing a 10% drop over the past 5 years for all students, with further breakdown of scores for sub-populations of students. Sub-population scores show much larger drop in scores for Students with disabilities (closer to 20% drop), and scores much lower than the provincial averages for Indigenous students.

Districts across #bced are slashing budgets for the 2026/2027 school year in response to the province not providing increases to funding rates - not even matching inflation. For anyone in media keeping track, here are cuts that will likely be approved this week by VSB (Wed. PM):
At least 39 teachers
Five Vice Principals
Three Student Support Workers (SSB level)
Two District teaching staff positions
Two District learning staff positions
Teaching time equivalent to 2.5 positions for curriculum and assessment implementation in secondary schools
Two District Principals; and
1.5 ‘Other’Professional’ positions

Whoa! VSB has spent $9.35M on lawyers to fight the French school board in court. That is, the BC government is spending millions to sue itself, probably $10s of millions. Great reporting by @loriculbert.bsky.social; worth it for the photos alone!
A March 2025 board finance committee report did not detail how much the district has spent on lawyers over Kingsgate. But it said the board had estimated legal fees of $9.35 million to fight an unrelated, continuing lawsuit over land brought by the Conseil scolaire francophone.
