From Portland's Fair Share Tax overview page: Mega Corporations can cut their taxes by 80% with this ONE WEIRD TRICK www.portland.gov/council/dist...
A Tale of Two Business: How This Ordinance Works
A neighborhood bakery with $300,000 in sales pays $0.
A Mega Corporation with $100 million in Portland sales, 7% margin, CEO paid 1,800 times the median worker pays about $1.1 million.
Note: "Mega Corporation" can cut its city tax bill by more than 80% simply by raising worker pay or bringing CEO pay back toward norms in the 1970s (roughly 30 to 1 ratio).

And if you need some help drafting a comment, this is mine
When Police Chief Day says he "no longer has confidence" in Councilor Green in an official statement claiming that it is because he believes the councilor has an "agenda" that is, he strongly implies, "uncivil and not inclusive" he is using his position and office to influence public opinion about a political figure up for reelection. This is in direct violation of Portland City policy HRAH-406
(https://www.portland.gov/policies/human-resources-administrative-rules/employee-behavior-expectations/hrar-406-political).

Specifically "The City defines “political activity” as an activity directed toward supporting or opposing federal, state or local measures, candidates, recalls, political committees, or petitions." going further with "While engaged in a political activity, non-elected City employees may not use their official authority or influence."

I call on you to hold Chief Day to the same standards as any other non-elected City employee.

Seemed like a short survey, but then I started writing...
My comments on the first set of questions:

Getting people out of cars and onto buses and bikes will do more to improve safety and reduce costs than any other possible measure. How do we reduce maintenance costs? Reduce the cause of those costs: cars. Any steps that don't work to reduce the number of cars on the road will ultimately increase current and future costs.

Removing cars from the road is a win for everyone, even people who choose to, or must, drive. Fewer cars on the road means less congestion, more reliable transit (inducing demand for transit), and is safer for pedestrians and bicyclists (inducing demand for those modes as well).

You know, as we all know, that adding more lanes doesn't solve congestion and it doesnt make things cheaper. It costs more to build, more to maintain, and induces demand that strains all other roads in a city The responsible thing is to support non-auto based transportation modes. Do the responsible thing. My comments on the second set of questions:

Driving sucks. Driving is individually *expensive*, S1000/mo on average according to AAA. We have a lot of key assets along I-5 we need to preserve for the sake of interstate trade, but the majority of money should go toward supporting infrastructure that reduces the miles people need to drive, possibly down to zero for many people. That would mean the $1,000/mo could be spent on literally anything else, food, rent, child care, a cool new bike, savings, a second even cooler new bike. Things that directly benefit local communities, not auto manufacturers, banks, and oil conglomerates. My comments on the third set of questions:

The "Traffic congestion" impact is misleading. Removing alternative modes of transportation (buses, bikes, and walking) is what will cause increased congestion. Forcing people to choose to drive means more cars on the road which means more congestion.

Removing those things are also what will decrease safety. It's also what will increase repair costs. My final comments on the survey:

"Transportation" is a term that all to often ends up just meaning "cars." To be sure, cars make up a large portion of how people transit from pointA to point B; however, a transportation system that doesn't provide an equal amount of support for non-car centric transportation options can't use "everyone drives" as a justification for prioritizing cars above all else.

I would be more sympathetic to state and agency leaders tasked with balancing priorities if there wasn't mountains of research, real-world examples both domestic and abroad, and historical data backing up the reality that cars are not inevitable or even to many people *preferable*. I love riding my bike. I hate that I'm treated like a second-class citizen, forced to work around cars instead of cars working around me.

What would make me confident the state is spending the transportation budget wellQ Being able to get to destinations outside my city without having to drive; Seeing projects that benefit all modalities, not just cars; Leaders who lead and make decisions that are backed by science, not driven by businesses that make demands that will make their own lives worse.

Note that only the women need to weigh < 150 lbs, the dudes can weigh up to 220 lbs. I guess men aren't expected to put kids on their bikes or carry cargo since 220 + 65 only leaves you with 115 lbs to spare, not nearly enough for anything else! I guess I'm glad I bought my @ternbicycles.com used

Elisa doesn't think her daughter should use AI, but once you're old enough it's totally find to ditch all those critical thinking skills and use AI for everything up to and including legal documents. "Critical thinking? Isn't that like algebra? No one uses that when they graduate."
EDITORS: What concerns do you have about AI?

ELISA: My main concern about AI is our children using it. My daughter, who is in middle school, wants to use ChatGPT for everything; I worry that she is not spending enough time thinking—developing knowledge and critical-thinking abilitiesELISA: I believe I was the only person using AI in my building at the beginning of the school year. I’m the kindergarten chair, so I’ve been sharing how I use Copilot with my team. But for the most part, they feel tired and overworked, like Louis said, and they don’t see (yet) how much time it can save. More recently, our exceptional student education teachers started using it, as did our support facilitators, to help them with IEPs and legal documents.

Welp. Fuck Andy Weir I guess. Imagine claiming to like sci-fi and then bitching about how "political" it is as if that wasn't a large part of it's entire reason for existing, to explore society through an infinity of lenses. Straight up 13 year old brain thinking. gizmodo.com/andy-weir-st...
"l dislike social commentary. Like... I really hate it. When I'm reading a book, I just want to be entertained, not preached at bg the author. Plus, it ruins the wonder of the story if I know the author has a political or social axe to grind. I no longer speculate about all possible outcomes of the story because I know for a fact that the universe of that book will conspire to ensure that the author's political agenda is validated. I hate that," Weir said. "l put no politics or social commentary into my stories at all.Anyone who thinks they see something like that is reading it in on their own. I have no point to make, and I'm not truing to affect the reader's opinion on anything.Mg sole job is to entertain, and I stick to that."

"For instance, as a lifelong Star Trek fans it's always bothered me that there is a presumed 'responsibility' within Star Trek shows to talk about social issues," the writer added."l just want to watch Romulans and the Federation shoot at each other."

The people of Bluesky genuinely do not give a fuck about attracting more people to the site or ass-kissing journalists and personalities to come here. This is largely a group of countercultural progressives who are fucking tired of the very status quo people who come here to complain. ‪

Alan Elrod‬
I actually do want more people to come here. In fact, I’d love if everyone who isn’t right-wing freak left X tomorrow and came here.
Twitter when it was good was full of a lot of different people, often going at it (for better and worse).
And I think Bluesky is designed for better discourse

‪rimidar‬
Yeah, this is the kind of mentality that is absolutely corrosive to the website in general. ‘countercultural progressives’ oh get over yourself

‪Anil Dash‬
Counterpoint: people who say it's better on a site that profits from generating and selling child sexual abuse material should actually not be welcomed to this site, and can't be trusted to build a healthy community here.

yeah, i think a commitment to public health obligates you to get vaccinated and, when you are sick, do what you can to avoid spreading that to other people. the demand that one mask at all times in public spaces is, i think, unreasonable.

This President is obviously hellbent on deploying the military in American cities, absent facts or authority to do so. It is up to us and the courts to hold him accountable. That's what we intend to do.

Oregonians know what's really happening here. Portland isn't a war zone. As a community, we need to come together and take this moment to show the world who we are: keep Portland safe while our fight in the court continues to move forward.

We're ready today to hold the administration accountable and to protect the people of Oregon.
