Yes this is in response to current events. I suggest men who are offended by women exercising in comfortable clothes join a fully cloistered male only monastery. That should keep them safe from the moral harms of saying incredibly stupid things in public.

Oddly enough when I wore similar clothing to World Gym for years when I was powerlifting, no one ever bothered me, even though of course you stick your butt out a lot doing squats and deadlifts. Part of why I love serious lifters is they DGAF as long as you rack your weights after & let ppl work in

The gym teacher blamed me for wearing such fitted clothing. I was 12! No one ever told me who slapped me, though the list of suspects was limited. It’s over 30 years later and I have never forgotten and I have never forgiven and I have never blamed myself.

When I was ~12, I wore solid back leggings with stirrups to gym class, guess you’d call them yoga pants now. While I was doing some kind of pulling exercise, (tug o war?), someone slapped my butt. I immediately turned around and yelled who did that, ready to fight. The cowards refused to tell me.

Inktober Day 4: Succulent (the official prompt was cactus but I prefer to be less specific and draw a succulent from my collection, because I lately much prefer to draw from life) #PenAndInk #inktober #inktober2026
On top of a spiral sketch notebook a small cylindrical plant pot with a tiny succulent. Three views of the plant are sketched in black in on the page from left to right: the plant alone from the side, the whole pot from the side with the plant and a detailed shadow, and the plant from above with a little of the pot visible. Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

I haven’t had formal fine art training so I’m likely just re-discovering the kind of generative cross pollination that happens when you practice multiple techniques. I expected some of the things that happen to one’s technique from practicing pencil sketches

Dysmorphia @dys-morphia.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
When I went back to pen and ink after learning to watercolor my sketching was totally different. I could be more spontaneous and yet more precise. When I combined pen and ink with watercolor, both were changes. Now, as with this sketch the monochrome discipline of ink came into watercolor.

It was a very warm day at the cafe, so I didn’t want to take the time to mix multiple colors. Instead, I sketched a monochrome in 5 minutes & I’m very happy with it—mostly because it shows I can do a nice sketch very quickly; it just takes 2 years of practicing the subject first. #watercolor #coffee

reading Vector Media by Impett and Offert and am very fixated on this paragraph
deeply learned forms of representation, yet offer a mode of vision that seems removed from tangible interaction. Though, in truth, the relationship to touch is far more complex: from digital pictures that lack physicality to heavily textured paintings or bas-reliefs that invite, even simulate, a tactile experience, as in Bernard Berenson's
(1896) "tactile values" or David Freedberg's (2017) account of bodily
empathy.
Computer vision, shaped in Marr's shadow, rests on an unstated assumption of continuity between vision and pictures, overlooking that it is fundamentally modeling a medium (photography), perhaps even a genre (amateur smartphone photography), rather than a sense (vision). Computer vision's latent theory of photography, as Malevé and Sluis (2023) put it, stems from precisely these "ontological conflations between 'real world' and photograph, human eye and camera, snapshot and visual stimulus." Or, we might add, OpenAl's conflation of TikTok-slop video generation and world simulation. Conceptual or even philosophical contradictions that, as Agre suggested, tend to surface precisely in Al's highly material, technical impasses.

Notes
This chapter owes a large debt to the connections between the history of philosophies of vision (especially those of the European Enlightenment) and computer vision first laid out by the art historian Michael Baxandall (1995, 60), who described neural networks as a "plastic, reactive, association machine that would have pleased Condillac more than Locke."
OpenAl's use of that term initially described something close to a technical report, a kind of self-published scientific paper, typeset in LaTex and hosted on arxiv; it now describes something between a blog post and a product launch page.
It is difficult to overstate the genuine surprise felt by the techr

The crisis in tech is ultimately a crisis of intersubjectivity. I'll bang this drum forever but I consider AI tech of this sort as arising from the historical logics underpinning social media, attention economy, influencing, etc down the line instead of some new, bespoke thing all its own.

I also think if you enjoy the process of making the notebooks, or cutting and preparing the paper, then it's fair to discount the price of that labor. Also, there are times I can't paint, but I can still cut paper or fill half-pans, organize brushes, etc and to me it's all part of the craft.

Dysmorphia @dys-morphia.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Indeed! For me, it's an even better deal because I prefer to paint on loose sheets. I tape them down to a board and work that way. I bought a ton of postcard-sized paper last time I was in Tokyo as an experiment and found that for casual urban sketching, I much prefer that to a notebook.

My theory, specifically for the Richmond, is that it might have more people who came from suburbs so any nonzero amount of strangers on the street reads as potential danger.

Anyway, it's long been a theory of mine that the reason visitors to the city think it's terrible, when it's just—you know—not, is because all the hotels are *right* on the edge of the bit of town that has the most drugs and homelessness. So anyway, I found some goddam proof. Here's dashful.com

The feeling safe vs drug enforcement and unsheltered people in the Richmond district is interesting. I lived there from 2002 to 2016, and it was (and when I visit still seems to be) one of the quietest and most peaceful parts of the city. But the feeling of safety is lower than the Sunset.

I still tend to sketch on both sides unless it's marker sketches that show through. I also paint on both sides of my watercolor paper. Every few months I go through my collection of paintings and set aside my favorites, while all the rest get pulled into service for other side painting.

Now that I've recalibrated, I've become profiglate with sketching. In the field, I go direclty to the watercolor paper because the precious resouce is my time. But at home doing still lifes, I like to do a few sketches first if I'm going to paint, and just sketch things all around me all the time.

So when my brain is used to the prices for 100% cotton 140lb/300gsm watercolor paper, the price for 98lb/160g mixed media paper seems amazingly cheap. Previously, I had the idea mixed media paper was expensive, because I was comparing it to printer paper or even nice fountain pen friendly paper

If I got watercolor paper in the cheapest possible way, at the best deal I see at Blick--full size sheets of 22x30 inches--and then cut them down myself ot 11x15, cost $1.47 a sheet. So 60 11x15 sheets would be $88.20. So, going back to per sheet: $0.22 watercolor vs $1.47 mixed media

Then I looked up how much a big pad like that costs, like we are talking 60 pages of 11x14 inch heavy stock paper and I kind of had reverse sticker shock. This sucker is like $13 at Blick. I got so used to watercolor paper prices that I couldn't believe it.

I've been doing a lot of sketching in the last couple of months. In late July I found a 11x14 mixed media sketch pad in a free box, and because it was free, I felt emboldened to "waste" a lot of it with huge-ass pencil and ink and even marker sketches just for practice.
