Aurora corona over the Goldstream Valley in Fairbanks, taken in January. photos.lwpetersen.com/Galleries/Al... #alaska #auroraborealis #northernlights #fairbanks
Looking straight up at a bright green aurora corona, where rays of light appear to burst outward from a single point overhead like a starburst. Feathery green streaks radiate in every direction, brightest along a broad band sweeping to the right, with faint touches of pink and purple at their edges. Stars show through the dark sky around the display, and the bare tip of a tree branch reaches in from the lower left corner.

Summer in Columbia Bay, near Valdez, Alaska, facing the Columbia Glacier, one of the fastest-retreating tidewater glaciers in the world. More of my Glacier and Iceberg Photography: photos.lwpetersen.com/Galleries/Al... #alaska #glacier #valdez #iceberg
A bay crowded with floating ice stretches toward a glacier at the head of the water. In the foreground, a large white iceberg with blue-tinged hollows sits low on the calm, reflective surface, surrounded by hundreds of smaller ice chunks scattered across the bay. In the distance, the broad, crevassed glacier flows down between dark, steep mountains, its surface lined with dark stripes of rock debris. Snow-capped peaks rise beneath a deep blue sky with billowing white clouds on the left.

Western columbine (Aquilegia formosa) along the Harding Icefield Trail in late June. Info in my Alaska Wildflower Guide: www.lwpetersen.com/alaska-wildf... #alaska #wildflowers #bloomscrolling #hiking
A single western columbine flower nods at the top of a slender green stem, sharply in focus against a dark, blurred green background. The flower is red and yellow: five red sepals spread outward with red spurs curving up and back behind them, framing shorter yellow inner petals, and a cluster of yellow-tipped stamens hangs down beneath the bloom. To the upper left, a smaller unopened bud rises on its own stalk. Lower on the stem are compound green leaves with rounded, lobed leaflets, and a second bud droops downward, still closed and tinged red and green.

Donald Trump admits what DOJ and most of the legacy media refuse to. The U.S. Postal Service mail-in ballot rule was a partisan effort to help the GOP. SCOTUS' decision was, in his words: "a big loss for Republicans."

A little reflection under Microdot Peak at Hatcher Pass, Alaska, last night. #alaska #hiking
View of a tall mountain with steep green slopes and lots of gray talus and rock under a blue sky with light white clouds. Beneath the mountain is a small, rocky pond, lightly reflecting the golden evening light and lots of white, gray, and black talus in the tundra in the foreground.

Looking over the Gulkana Glacier in the Eastern Alaska Range, Snow White in the background. Photo was taken in late July of this year. Story and more photos on my Field Notes Substack: lwpetersen.substack.com/p/weekend-in... #alaska #hiking #glacier
A glacier fills a valley, its pale gray ice sweeping in a broad curve from the distance down toward the foreground. The surface is streaked with long curving bands of dark rock debris that trace the ice's flow, and the lower foreground gives way to dark gray moraine and loose rubble. Steep rocky ridges patched with snow rise on both sides of the valley. In the background, a snow-capped peak stands above the head of the glacier under a clear blue sky.

A small arch in the seracs of the Gabriel Icefall on the Gulkana Glacier, eastern Alaska Range. Photos and story in my Field Notes From the North: lwpetersen.substack.com/p/incredible... #alaska #glacier #hiking
A glacier's cracked surface fills the frame, its ice pale blue-white and streaked with dark bands of rock and grit. In the lower foreground the ice curves into a small arch, hollowed out so that a pocket of deep blue glows in the shadow beneath it. Above and behind, the glacier climbs in a jumble of fractured seracs and ridges toward its upper icefall, and a dark, rocky peak with a few patches of snow rises against a flat gray overcast sky in the upper left.

Why did 19 Senate Dems vote to confirm Kratsios and keep handing our government over to Thiel and Andreessen? It doesn't even seem like they're bribed with crypto cash. It must be that they truly don't get it - they don't understand who it is that is attacking democracy. 4/

Mt. Iliamna over the Cook Inlet at sunset from the beach at Anchor Point near Homer, Alaska. Read about the trip on Field Notes from the North: lwpetersen.substack.com/p/homer-suns...
A wide sunset over Cook Inlet from a dark gravel beach near Anchor Point, Alaska. The sky is layered with grey and gold clouds lit orange and pink from below, with a band of clear yellow light along the horizon. Across the water, a line of blue-grey mountains rises into the broad snow-covered cone of Mount Iliamna, catching the last warm light. Low waves break on the shore in the foreground.

Aialik Glacier and plenty of wildlife. My latest post is live on Substack. lwpetersen.substack.com/p/late-summe...
The northern edge of Aialik Glacier's terminus, a jumbled wall of pale blue and white ice riven with crevasses and pinnacles, meeting dark wet bedrock on the right where the ice runs up against the fjord wall. Calm green-gray water fills the bottom of the frame under flat gray sky.Three tall rock sea stacks rise from calm turquoise water, each topped with wind-shaped spruce and patches of green moss. Fog drifts across the forested cliffs behind them under a pale white sky.

Sunset colors over Ballaine Lake in Fairbanks tonight. Taken just after midnight on June 20, 2026. photos.lwpetersen.com/Recent-Photos #alaska #sunset #midnightsun
Wide landscape photograph of Ballaine Lake near Fairbanks, Alaska, taken just after midnight on June 20, 2026. The sky is filled with dramatic clouds glowing bright orange and gold from low sun near the solstice, with patches of blue visible at the edges. A treeline of spruce silhouettes the horizon on both sides of the frame. The still lake surface creates a near-perfect mirror reflection of the sky and treeline, with the warm cloud colors and tree silhouettes doubled in the water.
