Oh my word. Karishma Jobanputra's debut collection The Body of the Thing is magnificent. An exploration of all the ways in which women's bodies aren't entirely their own that is funny, tragic and beautiful. #💙📚 thinkaboutreading.wordpress.com/2026/09/29/t...

Today we remember Sylvia Pankhurst, who died on this day in 1960. Pankhurst women were each a strong flavour, and Sylvia is our favourite. Brought up by suffragist socialist activist parents, Sylvia trained as an artist (Manchester, then Royal College of Art), noting every exclusion along the way

It's taken me 3 years to get round to reading Hattie Collins's book about the origins and evolution of grime, but it was worth the wait. It's 10 years old and I'd like to read a follow up that covers what came next. #💙📚 thinkaboutreading.wordpress.com/2026/09/27/t...

All power to booksellers. I've been thinking recently about how I've got into lazy habits with my book buying. Book subscriptions and online shopping take less time but also shut out the serendipity of conversation and browsing. I'm not sure how time became more important than bookshop mooching.

A tawny port in a snazzy shot glass that makes me think of the circus. It's also the same size as the Baptist communion glasses we used to neck what might have been Vimto from when I believed in that stuff, so it makes me want to say, "The blood of Christ." It has been a week.
A tawny port in a snazzy shot glass with red diamonds and stars, held by my left hand. I had it too close to the camera, so the focus is softer than it should be. Cheers!

Over on Instagram, I'm nonplussed by how many accounts with photos of scantily clad women this photograph is attracting. Cream teas are pure filth, I guess.
A fruit scone cut in two with cream and jam applied as is the Devon way. Clearly something rubbed off on me during the 16 months and 23 days I spent working in Plymouth in the mid-90s. This innocent scene is bait for the pornbot accounts of Instagram, it turns out.

This is one of my favourites of all @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social's short stories. Its English absurdist bent is spot on, as is the ending: potential mild horror for some, the natural order of things for others. I'm just over halfway through the book which is transporting me away from mundanity.

A woman shrouded in white fabric stares into the camera. She stands between information boards and a suggestion box, with non-fiction books about religion, sociology, economics and careers behind her. She made her career choice aged 16 when she joined Oldham Library Service straight from school. She worked for the service for 42 years, becoming Senior Library Assistant at Broadway Library, the location for this photograph. She was my mum and if there is any reason to ask why I am the person I am, this photograph goes some way to answering that question.

Working late for a group visit and defying the serving suggestion of sliced green beans and roasted cherry tomatoes by serving this 'pie'* in its microwavable tray. . . . *It's a bake, and even that's charitable. I was in a fancy hotel thinking about room service this time last week.
Here is my beige tea. A Sainsbury's 'Cheese & Onion Potato Pie with an extra mature cheddar and leek sauce, crispy sliced potatoes and cheese crumb'. Served in its microwavable tray with the serving suggestion image alongside it. The crumb somehow ended up under the potatoes, which aren't crispy on account of being microwaved. It looks nothing like the serving suggestion.

These pieces of spiced fruit cake and lemon drizzle cake with their adorable strawberry garnishes went into my cake stomach. Despite being too full to move after room service last night, I've managed a hearty breakfast and was pleased to see teapots with the mugs. Will I regret eating approximately three times as much breakfast as usual? It depends on how engaging the conference papers are and how warm the room is.
A mug of tea on a marble table with the teapot the tea was brewed in. Tea is so much nicer when it's had time to steep, unbruised by a mashing teaspoon, and poured onto milk through a spout. The ritual is also soothing.

I ordered room service for the first time in my life. It felt decadent. It was delicious. I am too full to move.
A tray bearing sweet potato, chickpea, squash and spinach masala with wild rice, vegan raita, mango chutney and a poppadom, alongside a plate containing an apple and toffee crumble tart with salted caramel sauce, raspberries and cinnamon ice cream, ordered from room service because I'm almost 56 and I have never ordered room service before. It was all delicious. Also in the table is a glass of shiraz, which I bought in a 250ml bottle from Sainsbury's for £2.50 earlier, because I'm not made of money.
