22 California billionaires have spent a combined $150 million so far to defeat Prop 40. By spending their fortunes trying to stop California from taxing billionaires, they're making the argument for a billionaire wealth tax more clearly and articulately than anyone else possibly could.

NEW: The contrasting colors in NGC 7129 show differences in temperatures detected by #NASAWebb. The gold cavity at the left is hottest due to the central star and other embedded stars. The clumpy, red matter is colder and represents jets from less mature protostars: news.stsci.edu/3U8T7Bz 🔭
A young star cluster filled with many stars that display the Webb Telescope’s unique eight-pronged diffraction pattern. At its center is a yellow star, which sports the largest diffraction pattern. To the left of the star, there is a region filled with yellow dust and gas that extends from the star to the left border. This yellow region extends from the bottom, covering about two-thirds of the image. The yellow region has several blue stars of different sizes embedded within. The top third, which lies outside of the yellow region, holds a few bright protostars, within dense gray gas. Those stars illuminate the gas, making it appear blue. A few red outflows from other protostars are visible above this grayish-blue region. To the right of the central star, there is a clumpy, flame-like plume of red dust and gas with protostars that emit a soft white light within. The plume is surrounded by more dense gray gas and dust. There are several background galaxies strewn throughout the image/

I can't stop looking at these rocks that Perseverance has been poring over the last few days. They remind me so much of rock on Earth where I find tiny fossils. To be clear, not saying that has anything at all to do with what we're seeing here, but these do look geologically interesting.

This week’s image is of NGC 6164-5! Captured by Gemini South, this dramatic inverted S-shaped cloud is a nebula sculpted by gases ejected from the rapidly aging, massive star at its core. Check out the 🧵 for another paper. #Astronomy 📸 in thread
An image of the emission nebula NGC 6164-5 set against a black, star-filled background. At the very center shines the exceptionally bright star HD 148937, radiating intense white and purple light. Surrounding the star is a thick, glowing bipolar cloud of gas and dust that forms an inverted S-shape with somewhat rectangular, rounded corners. The outer edges of these nebula lobes glow brightly in striking orange and reddish hues, especially along the top-right and bottom-left curves. The interior of the nebula, closer to the central star, features darker, heavily textured clouds in shades of deep red, brown, and purple. Several prominent stars with diffraction spikes and countless smaller, fainter stars are scattered throughout the surrounding space.

Did you see this really neat image from my thread yesterday? It was taken by AS Fruchter at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory and is an H-alpha image (hydrogen gas emitting as the 21cm photon). Here is an updated, annotated version from me. We don't see the pulsar here, only the WD.
grainy image of the PSR J0437-4715 system creating a bow shock as it plows through the Galaxy. A red line is drawn between the pulsar and front of bow shock and annotated as being approx. 47 times the Sun-Neptune distance. The pulsar dot itself is annotated, noting that the pulsar and the white dwarf are only 1 million km apart. A nearby galaxy, RX J0437.4-4711 is also annotated.

Scientists call this region the Extreme Outer Galaxy due to its location at the edge of our Milky Way. It contains two massive molecular clouds from which clusters of stars are actively forming, as captured in this #NASAWebb image: bit.ly/4fRIdZ4
A star-forming region. At center right is a compact star cluster composed of luminous red, blue, and white points of light. Faint jets with clumpy, diffuse material extend in various directions from the bright cluster. Above and to the right is a smaller cluster of stars. Translucent red wisps of material stretch across the scene. Background galaxies are scattered across this swath of space, appearing as small blue-white and orange-white dots or fuzzy, thin disks.
