It's been really exciting to work with @jayke.io, @gradientrider.bsky.social and the rest of this amazing team using JWST's AMI mode to find a fifth candidate planet in the classic HR 8799 system!
Figure from the paper, illustrating the orbits of all 4 previously known planets in HR 8799 and the putative fifth planet, closest to the star in orange.

Hot off the press! Via the magic of differentiable forward modeling and of non-redundant masking on JWST we may have found a new exoplanet! One of the most challenging papers I've written, but I'm glad its finally out! Submitted to AJ, pending peer review. arxiv.org/abs/2609.10507

A Candidate Innermost Fifth Planet In the HR 8799 System Revealed By JWST NIRISS Aperture Masking Interferometry
We detect a candidate fifth planet in the HR 8799 system, directly imaged with the JWST/NIRISS Aperture Masking Interferometer (AMI). The detected source lies just above a $3σ$ contrast curve at a con...

Super proud of @gradientrider.bsky.social winning the @astrosocaus.bsky.social ECR Software Prize for his optics code dLux!
Emerging Leaders in Astronomy Software Development Prize (sponsored by the Australian Research Data Commons)
Awarded to Dr Louis Desdoigts (Sydney, now at Leiden University) for ∂Lux - a physical optics simulation package that is fast, differentiable, and deploys to GPU and HPC environments. It is the base package behind AMIGO: a data-driven model of the Aperture Masking Interferometer (AMI), the only Australian hardware on JWST.

I just wanted to comment on some of the media coverage of our recent AMI papers - we regret a comparison in the press release with HST, which has been amplified in the subsequent coverage like in the linked article. This has got a bit out of hand and we've edited the PR to emphasise this.

Really happy with the write-up in the @sydmorningherald.bsky.social of our work with JWST interferometry, with quotes from me, @spiralstar.bsky.social, and @gradientrider.bsky.social, and above all a great photoshoot with @maxecharles.bsky.social showing his tattoo of the instrument!

Thrilled to have two years' of work out, in a pair of papers led by @gradientrider.bsky.social and @maxecharles.bsky.social. We've built a data-driven calibration of the James Webb Interferometer to near its fundamental limits for high-res imaging - explainer at @aunz.theconversation.com!

Thanks @benjaminpope.bsky.social! None of this would have been possible without your guidance and unending dedication to your students 🙌🙌🎉
