New species now out in @soilorganismsj.bsky.social! soil-organisms.org/SO/article/v... The latest addition to the UK's springtail fauna: Entomobrya terraeincognitae sp. nov. I found this species on fieldwork for my PhD @sangerinstitute.bsky.social at the Cambridge botanics. 🧵

#NorfolkFloraGroup visited #RSPB 's Hope Farm yesterday- thank you so much @duerden.bsky.social for showing us around and answering lots of questions. We made over 300 records, and were especially pleased to see broad-leaved spurge and slender tare, amongst many other lovely plants.

Second, the non-native slug Arion vulgaris found on an early morning bird survey. Confirmed by dissecting out the genitalia and opening the oviduct to reveal an elongate, un-fringed ligula! #Pan-speciesListing

Two new records for RSPB Hope Farm this week. First, what I think is Galium × pomeranicum the hybrid between Hedge Bedstraw (G. album, left) and Lady's Bedstraw (G. verum, right). The Hedge Bedstraw especially has become quite dominant in these sown, in-field strips. (1/2)

Thanks Philip! That systematics paper is really useful, I prefer their approach of lumping them into ssp. each with varieties and cultivars. That approach is suggested by Cope and Gray, and Stace but still unsure why they say Six-rowed is rarely cultivated. I'll lump them in my notes!

I thought Winter Barley = Six-rowed = Hordeum vulgare s.s and Spring Barley = Two-rowed = H. distichon but Stace, Cope and Gray, BSBI etc say Six-rowed is "rarely cultivated" in Britain. Can anyone help? @amiesphilip.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social @bramblebotanist.bsky.social 2/2

Yes, agree. "Weed"/"weedy" are better descriptors of food plants for e.g., Linnet and Turtle Dove than "wildflower" too

Adder's-tongue was a surprising first record for RSPB Hope Farm this week! 73 plants near a pond in old permanent pasture. The grazing regime has been relaxed in the last couple of years which could explain why it has not been found before.

It's not often you see two new fish in a day, let alone two new new non-native invasive fish. Following on the from the Sunbleak netted earlier, I also saw Topmouth Gudgeon, Pseudorasbora parva, a species in the process of being eradicated from Britain.

There are normally three characters on the nasal saddles of these French Tufted Ducks. One in the middle, two on the side. Yours could be something like "FB=" but pictures from other angles might confirm
