it’s become so normal for people to disclose their rapes to appeal to people’s humanity around rape cases that we don’t think about how disgusting the need to do that is put the worst moment of your life out for public consumption, so that half the comments can call you a liar.

This happens so often. And colleges get super territorial, discouraging police reporting or involvement of advocates to help those who do report. So many times the person who committed the assault gets treated with kids gloves with no consequences, while the victim is left broken on their own.

[Rape] It's often a friend. Mine was a friend of a friend. These narratives of some dark alley stranger attack are flawed. It happens. Not often. And the bitch of it is, that familiarity is used against you because you didn't have preternatural foresight to know which "friend" it'll be.

What I can say is… colleges have incentive to keep things like this quiet and it’s been going on for years. Almost any school I guarantee you find a woman who was attacked and their attacker’s future was put before hers by the admin. The Clery Act was proposed for a reason.

O hey Reminder that in (homophobic) '94 as Dookie was blowing up, Green Day picked queercore Pansy Division to open for them + a lot of venues pressured them to drop them as openers -- Green Day told the venues they wouldn't play if PD didn't - and the venues (mostly? all?) backed down. huh.

This is so important. If you want to help, find a group already doing the work. They will have the experience and the blueprint, they just need people to show up. No need to reinvent what’s being done, it’s already there.
