❓Who were the Colums? Mary Colum was an influential reviewer and critic, feared for her rapier wit by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. Her husband Padraic Colum was a successful author of children’s stories, a poet, playwright and essayist, and like Mary a political activist.

Marian Keyes is one of Ireland’s most important fiction authors but is often not celebrated as such. This groundbreaking study seeks to challenge the existing narrative on Keyes and opens a window to her extraordinary writings for future readers.n the histories of 20th-century Irish literature and of New York literary circles, Mary & Padraic Colum are unjustly forgotten. Margaret Kelleher’s meticulous and long-overdue excavation is the first joint biography of the Colums.
Mary & Padraic Colum: Lives and the Dream follows a five-decade love story, which was a chronicle of the cultural and political foment of early 20th-century Ireland, James Joyce’s émigré circle in 1930s Paris, and the hotbed intellectual and literary life of New York from World War I to the 1960s.Interrogating rare and previously untouched primary sources, the contributors capture an array of New Zealand outlooks on the political, social, and cultural evolution of Ireland from 1912 to 1923.
