I will never stop buying blu-rays/4Ks. : | Well...as long as they'll let me, anyways. (This is why I bit the bullet and paid through the ass for the STRANGERS THINGS super-box set from ARROW...who knows when they'll ever do something like this again?)

This is why I buy blu-rays. Glad I got all 4 seasons of WESTWORLD...it's a DAMN GOOD, and DAMN GOOD LOOKING, show!

I really love Clive Barker, but I can only do the first 2 HELLRAISER MOVIES (HELLRAISER 2 is actually underappreciated to me...I love how AMBITIOUS it is in how it scales up the mythology and it's WILD visuals), though I can sort of fuck with BLOODLINES, which has good ideas if not a great execution

It still had the Easter Eggs and the overall beats and tropes of the mythology, but the mandate of this show seems to have been, "How do we make John Stewart THE Green Lantern and not A Green Lantern?" And in that...they were wholly successful. And they did it in a canny, mature, and poignant way.

While a lot of these Marvel and DC movies and shows do change things out of necessity in the adaptation process, I think comics fans (like myself) sort of expect things we know to be remixed and regurgitated back to us...we crave the same, familiar, stories. LANTERNS truly did it's own thing.

Derek Halliday 🇨🇦 @dthalliday.bsky.social · 6h
A lot of thought and care went into crafting this show...more than I think comic fans are probably used to. I've seen a lot of the theories and stuff, and most of them were pulling stuff from the comics and how the could use that to bring Jordan back or to make him the big bad, etc.

Derek Halliday 🇨🇦 @dthalliday.bsky.social · 6h
I also like that this version of John Stewart isn't just another soldier in another corp...that he's managed to carve out his own place in this world and become his own thing. It gives him a significance that he could never really have in the comics, because there he's just ANOTHER Green Lantern.

...better man. "Don't be afraid to be afraid." is a REALLY good line, and I like that it comes from the best version of Hal Jordan, and it frees John from the things that have been weighing him down, and allows him to let go himself, and forgive Hal...and his family.

Derek Halliday 🇨🇦 @dthalliday.bsky.social · 6h
While the show did offer up a good character study of this version of Hal Jordan, as a prideful man who could not let go of anything, it's really a character study and rather COMPLETE origin for this version of John Stewart, who undergoes an extreme life and ends knowing himself and being a...

I liked the ending of LANTERNS. I like that it didn't end in another superhero punch up...I feel like there is novelty in that. It's not like the show was ever lacking in action, and we already got a big 3rd act spectacle two episodes ago. I like that this ends with catharsis to the drama.

To expand on this: Bigotry isn't a result of an innocent misunderstanding, or not having all the facts. It's not a choice made rationally, defeated with a rational argument. Bigotry is a self-protective, foundational belief used to help make the world make sense to them. Debate won't change that.

I don't have many hills I will die on, but one of them is that comic book companies have to stop ceding publishing territory to third parties and letting them taking over that space WHEN YOU COULD CONTROL IT YOURSELF! Yes, this is about Marvel turning its digital comics stuff over to WebToons.

This was the best part of an otherwise terrible movie. This really scarred me as a kid. I saw only THIS PART while visiting family in Ohio, and for the longest time thought it was just a nightmare I had. SURELY no SUPERMAN movie would be this HEINOUS, thought I.

A good fresh Star Trek take on those fake isekai title jokes
A tumblr screenshot showing a post and two reblog responses, reading:
1. "star trek would be the ideal fictional universe to get trapped in because you'd explain your situation and they'd be like yeah makes sense. no further questions. fortunately we can use the mysterious warp signature emitting from this system's icy moon to counterface with the solar radiation and slingshot you back home"
2. "I'm from a universe where your world is all a work of fiction." Benjamin Sisko, nodding. "That happened to me once."
3. "I Got Isekaid Into The Star Trek Universe And They Quickly Understood What Was Happening"

I'm SO GLAD I got the DVD of this show when it was released YEARS ago. What a charming experiment, combining European and Japanese visual and storytelling aesthetics to create a wonderfully imaginative original series. I wish more people had seen this when it was on.

...for his big triumph to be to win at a game no one really cares about, with no stakes, and nothing to gain, beyond his own satisfaction that he's really good at table tennis, and sacrificing EVERYTHING he stood to gain to do it. It's like...an ANTI-arc, and there is a novelty in that that I like.

There was just something really bold and refreshing about watching a selfish, grandiose, dickhead constantly dig himself into holes, only to climb out and dig a deeper hole, and learn almost NOTHING from the suffering he inflicts on himself and others, burning every bridge for his ambitions...

...as something that never really slows down for very long, moving from increasingly absurd Schadenfraude debacle to the next, each becoming more violent and disastrous as the stakes become higher and higher, and in the end...our 'hero's' big arc is that he becomes and only SLIGHTLY better person.

I watched this with my parents not really knowing what it was about (I had seen a bunch of hype, but sort of dismissed it because I just don't really fuck with Chalamet that much) and we were ALL blown away. Much like you, I could not say what I think the film was about, but it WAS captivating...

Derek Halliday 🇨🇦 @dthalliday.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
What's disappointing and awkward about the film is the way it dances around any hint of queerness...it doesn't banish it, but it's quite tentative and AFRAID of it. But I suppose this is a product of it's time, when even just putting Brad Pitt's face CLOSE to Antonia Banderas' face was bold.

Derek Halliday 🇨🇦 @dthalliday.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yeah, this fucks. I'm still find Brad Pitt underwhelming (tho very pretty) and Tom Cruise DOES give it his all, but is ultimately miscast as Lestat...not nearly as charming or as disarmingly funny as he should be, but he's TRYING really hard. Mostly the film is BEAUTIFUL. Like...exquisite.

This is what I was talking about earlier...this weird media push calling understanding and forgiveness for people that have spent the last DECADE focused on...EVERYTHING AROUND US. And now they feel it slipping away, and they're like, "This division is killing us! Reach out in kindness!" Fuck off.

I remember seeing WORZEL GUMMIDGE a few times very early on in the existence of YTV while at a neighbor's house in town (we didn't have cable/satellite until I was in my teens so I would RAVENOUSLY devour TV at other people's houses), and...WHY WAS THIS FOR KIDS!?! It wasn't charming at ALL. ^__^;;

Oh, LOTS of things. I was terrified of the Red Bull from THE LAST UNICORN, and that big Rat from THE SECRET OF NIMH. I saw both JAWS and PET SEMATARY far to young. The VHS cover of GHOULIES haunted me. The one time I heard the DOCTOR WHO theme song...lots of stuff.

This looks really great...I don't think I've ever heard of it. Looking it up...it did get an English dub and DVD release in 2003, but it was through ANIME WORKS, (which is now MEDIA BLASTERS, I think?) so I guess I missed this one. I was mostly getting ADV, FUNIMATION, GENEON, and BANDAI then.

I'd also say that she's the most interesting character in the film...but that could just be partially because she performs it all with such gusto and maturity. But it IS really juicy stuff...a child who becomes an adult but can never become a woman, and how that torments her.

The most impressive performance of this film is Kirsten Dunst as Claudia. God DAMN! I'll actually give this to Tom Cruise...he's better in scenes with Dunst than he is in scenes with Pitt. He's putting more in and getting more out of scenes with her.

Derek Halliday 🇨🇦 @dthalliday.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
But everything else is pretty exquisite and the scale of the production is impressive. This isn't being treated as a small film...it's grand in it's ambition and scale. Prestige Horror is a rare thing, and this is one of those rare instances of it.

...and things have change a LOT in 30 years, and I recall liking this film as a teenager when these two guys were considered PEAK performers, and I just don't think you'd play it this way now. It's not really fair to compare the two, either, because the TV show gets to be far more decompressed.
