fuck Adam Tickell, the OU proves that to be bullshit (and reminder the OU offers a pay as you go payment plan through their own student finance arm, its not as generous as SFE but it does make study affordable)

A big new story from us: a big new leak means that we can put numbers on the scale of A7 -- the Kremlin's huge money-laundering machine. $6.9bn laundered through the international banking system via SWIFT, with $1.1bn sent to StanChart alone. www.ft.com/content/3848...

..of course even this is highly misleading. In real terms, the increase is about £15bn, and as a %age of GDP it goes from 4.1% to 4.3% See "Benefit summary tables" sheet here: www.gov.uk/government/p...

This prompted me to go back and check the claim that "On current DWP forecasts, from the 2024 election until 2030, Labour will have increased working-age benefit spending by a further £51.6 bn/year." It appears to be equally fictional/spreadsheet error. Correct figure is maybe £36bn..

This is quite an interesting write-up of information operations being conducted on social media by Iran and Russia using OpenAI models. Side note: OAI rely on location transparency settings i.e. the app in question telling them where the user was connecting from. Should be a mandatory feature.

Landscapes of Proteus #artsky #ocsky #scifi #cyberpunk #protheus
A futuristic alien landscape in a flat graphic style. Dark soil covered with clusters of small golden mushrooms fills the foreground. In the distance, a pale plain with purple and red patches of terrain stretches between hills and rock formations. On the right, enormous mushroom-like plants rise on long, thin stems with broad, flat caps. A human figure in a dark suit stands on a rocky ledge on the left. Muted palette of cream, gray-green, purple, brown, and gold.

Sorry, I'll stop ranting now. I just find it very frustrating that there is mutually beneficial opportunity in all this if someone, anyone, is willing to engage in some creative social and financial engineering.

Just a complete lack of imagination or will from leadership when it comes to linking approval for private sector interests to helping solve national issues for the public good. "You get your datacenter and the community gets massively upgraded infrastructure" is a decent baseline for a deal!

It's like the data center build out. Why are we not just saying that they need to use closed cycle cooling (stops water waste), they need to buy [x] amount of bonds from some kind of state-owned investment bank which then uses that to fund domestic solar+batteries, grid upgrades or etc?

Declan @dskews.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
It's very frustrating. We (UK) passed up so much opportunity to build our own industry (Oxford PV comes to mind) and now we're not seeing the opportunity to meet our short term needs with cheap, durable kit while planning a mid-long term transition involving some mitigation of political risk.

Years ago, when I were a lad and first trying to get a bit savvy with my money, I had the opportunity to buy a lot of bitcoin for pennies. I didn't do that. I had the opportunity to buy Nvidia stock at like 10% of its current price. I didn't. I considered buying Samsung shares. I didn't. Don't be me

That said, and within reasonable limits, if the Chinese state wants to subsidise the rest of the world getting lots of cheap clean energy, we should take them up on the offer. Not blindly, and not in all areas, and not in the expectation that this will continue forever. But take the solar panels.

>the absurd competition dynamics that go on inside of China. Seriously, you cannot run an industrial sector like that forever. It will crash eventually. And then there is the 'true' cost of all this. Becoming dependent on China comes with a huge hidden debt that usually manifests politically.

Is it good that China has turned the screws on Western companies who are often wasteful, greedy, and unimaginative? Yes. Is the current system and trajectory sustainable? No. Firstly, you do eventually just hit a lower limit based on input prices. Secondly, China does 'cheat'. >

I make my living in renewables so obviously I'm totally unbiased buuut my take is that there's a lot going on and many different questions are tangled together. Is more renewable energy good? Yes. Is cheaper better (assuming consistent/good-enough quality)? Yes.

Add batteries to places. Cuts down on curtailment (which is just waste by another name), enables more efficient use of existing infrastructure (easier to add batteries than lay new cable/upgrade connections)...and I also happen to know a guy. Would you like some batteries?

You know how intel agencies normally like to deal with issues on the quiet? Mostly because the plebs would be upset if they knew the truth? That only works when you have the time to drip feed journalists. Under time constraints, it's more important to make known who the traitors are.

One of the most aggravating parts of all of this is that the only reason these particular fuckers are causing trouble is because the US decided to start a war in the Middle East. Again. The US starts ill-advises wars and Europe eats shit for it. Then the US rubs salt in the wound! Dickheads.

when your plan for keeping nuclear war limited has one little problem

Soviet declarations stress that acceptance of a policy of limited nuclear options in Europe would make nuclear war more likely. The theme that  deterrence of nuclear war would be weakened, if rules and limitations were established beforehand, has been evident over the past decade  in Soviet commentary on-U.S, discussions of "limited Wer" and NATO's strategy of flexible response. Further, there is nothing  in available  Soviet strategic writings reflecting military planning which anticipates Limited or multistage nuclear attacks  of the United States. There is virtually no indication that the Soviets accept the notion that  SENSITIVE vieAm pag  limited strategic war is feasible or that nuclear weapons could be used in some escalatory manner to create circumstances for negotiations or. bargaining; the Soviets apparently reject ‘the possibility that the US: and the USSR could exercise restraint, once nuclear weapons had been employed against their respective homelands;
