... both Aungle et al and Gelman and Brown might say, "I told you so." Respectively, there's either a ton of research supporting the role of expectations in mind-body healing OR the book makes a mountain out of an unreplicated molehill. What is most accurate? Who decides? My brain exploding!

If you can get past the you-said/we-said, we-said/you-said, you-said/we-said nature of the exchange, there are some very thoughtful points here are difficult to study topics, literature reviewing, theory, mechanisms, replication, analytic choices, and generalizability.

Brown & Gelman (journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....) close the discussion (so far) and argue that the "malleability of language..." permits researchers "...to write a persuasive argument even in the absence of any good evidence." The rejoinder argues for the importance of external replication.

In a lengthy target article (journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....) at #AMPPS, Gelman and Brown basically say, "Not so fast..." and critique the original paper as a case study of not providing evidence to support strong claims.

Start with this target article in Scientific Reports: www.nature.com/articles/s41... . The paper focuses on changes in perceived wound healing (after a cupping treatment protocol) as a function of perceived time; conclusion: the psychological experience of time may shape wound healing.

There is no reason why systematic reviews can't be open. The data used for synthesis is *already* open and there are many excellent open source tools that can facilitate the easy sharing of analysis scripts. Here's a nice guide for performing open systematic reviews doi.org/10.1525/coll...
This paper provides guidance and tools for conducting open and reproducible systematic reviews in psychology. It emphasizes the importance of systematic reviews for evidence-based decision-making and the growing adoption of open science practices. Open science enhances transparency, reproducibility, and minimizes bias in systematic reviews by sharing data, materials, and code. It also fosters collaborations and enables involvement of non-academic stakeholders. The paper is designed for beginners, offering accessible guidance to navigate the many standards and resources that may not obviously align with specific areas of psychology. It covers systematic review conduct standards, pre-registration, registered reports, reporting standards, and open data, materials and code. The paper is concluded with a glimpse of recent innovations like Community Augmented Meta-Analysis and independent reproducibility checks.
