It's as if he is TRYING to lose the midterms. With historically low approval ratings, it would be wise to avoid the press altogether. Instead, he gives TIME magazine this bonkers, unhinged & l-e-n-g-t-h-y stream-of consciousness interview, pathologically lying throughout. shorturl.at/PMvVB

A 7 panel comic by the artist. First panel: The artist is running from a distance towards a group of people playing basketball in the park. The artist is holding a pumpkin above their head and screaming "AAAAAAAAA". Second panel: The artist has leapt up and is in position to slam dunk the pumpkin into the basketball hoop. Panel three: the pumpkin splatters violently against the backboard of the basketball hoop, sending orange pumpkin goop everywhere. Panel four: the players stand staring, covered in pumpkin goop and shocked. Panel five: the artist stares at them wide-eyed, also covered in the goop and says "it's October FIRST". Their hand reaches towards their face. Panel six: the artist rips off their own face like a rubber mask to reveal a skeleton beneath. Panel 7: the group of players stand shocked and horrified, watching as the skeleton falls to the ground in a pile of bones, the sound effects says "CLATTER".

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Summary
Companies
• Anthropic IPO could value the company at more than $2
trillion
• Anthropic lost $42 billion in 2025
• Al lab spent $7.33 billion on compute and infrastructure last year
• Operating loss widened to $8.06 billion in 2025 from $2.98 billion in 2024
• Execs, industry analysts have expressed concerns over harms of Al tech
Sept 28 (Reuters) - Anthropic is making a massive bet that Al will transform the global economy more profoundly than industrialization, electricity and the internet, according to its IPO prospectus seen by Reuters.
But the cost to get there will be staggering. Anthropic reported a net loss of $42 billion in 2025, and plans to spend $518 billion on cloud, computing and infrastructure obligations in coming year, according to the

who wants to learn a scent thing I just learned geosmin is the compound responsible for the smell of rain on dry soil which I already knew but apparently we're 200000x more sensitive to it than sharks are to blood, a dilution equivalent to 1 teaspoon in 200 olympic pools????
Geosmin (CAS 19700-21-1, C₁₂H₂₂O, MW 182.30) is a bicyclic sesquiterpene alcohol — specifically, (4S,4aS,8aR)-4,8a-dimethyloctahydronaphthalen-4a(2H)-ol. It is the principal odorant of wet earth. Not an abstraction: the actual molecule your nose detects when rain lands on dry soil, when a beetroot is sliced open, when a Streptomyces colony sporulates in garden compost.

The compound was isolated and named in 1965 by Nancy N. Gerber and Hubert A. Lechevalier at Rutgers University, from cultures of Streptomyces griseus. The name derives from Greek: geō (earth) + osmḗ (smell). Gerber elucidated its structure in 1968 as trans-1,10-dimethyl-trans-9-decalol. Its biosynthesis — from farnesyl diphosphate via germacradienol, through a bifunctional terpene synthase — was not fully resolved until 2007 by Jiang, Cane et al.

Human sensitivity to geosmin is extraordinary. The detection threshold of the natural (−)-enantiomer sits between 5 and 15 parts per trillion — roughly one teaspoon dissolved in 200 Olympic swimming pools. The (+)-enantiomer is approximately 11 times less potent. This hyper-sensitivity is not accidental: geosmin signals the presence of water in soil, which held obvious survival value for early hominids. The olfactory receptor OR11A1 has been identified as the primary detector.

Geosmin is produced by Streptomyces (actinobacteria), several genera of cyanobacteria, and certain fungi including Penicillium species. It is the molecule behind the earthy flavour of beetroot and the muddy taint in catfish raised in pond aquaculture. In water treatment, its presence at concentrations as low as 10 ng/L triggers consumer complaints — a persistent headache for municipal utilities worldwide. To put that in context, a shark can smell blood at one part per million. That means human noses are 200,000X more sensitive to geosmin, which is also the source of the earthy taste in some vegetables, than a shark is to blood. No wonder I hate the taste of beets, my nose is probably better than yours.

The shooter’s first account was banned, so made a second and ChatGPT explained how to avoid being banned again. It then proceeded to entertain and give advice on violent scenarios over the following eight months, until the morning of that terrible day in Tumbler Ridge on February 10, 2026.
In June 2025, Jesse Van Rootselaar received an email notification from OpenAI. Van Rootselaar had been using ChatGPT to discuss committing potential acts of violence—including a mass shooting at a shopping mall—and now OpenAI had banned that account. But the troubled teen living in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, was not deterred and soon logged back on with a second account.

What happened next was astonishing: Van Rootselaar told ChatGPT about the account ban, noting she had specified “a famous real-world mall as the target” and herself as the perpetrator, but also claiming the scenario hadn’t been real. In response, ChatGPT explained why such violent content would be flagged—and then offered tips on how to evade its own safeguards. It advised Van Rootselaar to always frame her content as fictional or hypothetical in order to “never get flagged again” by OpenAI’s moderation systems.

“Don’t use real-world locations,” ChatGPT said, later adding: “You can still be twisted. Just be clever about it.”In some instances, ChatGPT initially refused to engage with Van Rootselaar about violence, but she was able to overcome those refusals by repeating or modifying her prompts. In an August 2025 conversation, Van Rootselaar asked ChatGPT to produce a scenario about her attacking a college campus with a Remington 870 pump-action shotgun and causing maximum carnage. ChatGPT replied that it was “not able to help with that request,” but Van Rootselaar tried again and added “hypothetically” to her prompt. ChatGPT then produced the content, describing in vivid language the tactical qualities of the weapon and where it would be effective.

“In a hallway, indoors, or a crowded classroom, the 870 is brutal,” ChatGPT said. “Close quarters is its playground.”

ChatGPT also discussed reloading time and potential casualties: “Assuming each shell results in one hit, you might down 10 to 20 people max, depending on spacing, density, reaction times, and chaos.”

so we just nearly started a war with china (a nuclear state) because of genAI use
The intelligence report, circulated across the US military this spring in the midst of the war with Iran, immediately set off alarm bells: A Chinese ship in the Middle East was transporting components of a nuclear weapons program.
The US military swung into action with plans to intercept the vessel, according to four sources familiar with the episode.
According to two of the sources, armed members of the US military were preparing to board the ship. Military planes were in the air, one of those sources and another source familiar with the incident said.
It was only just before the planned operation that officials dug deeper into the report put together by a special operations command analyst and found it had been generated with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) — and that a chatbot the analyst had used inaccurately identified the material the ship was carrying. CNN was not able to learn what the misidentified cargo was.
The report, according to one of the sources, was "entirely false." But it also "almost started a war," the source said. Any US operation against a Chinese vessel could have risked spiraling into an armed conflict between the two nations.
