I'm probably not the first one to bring this up, but when I try to respond to polls that contact me by text message, halfway through they turn out to be a campaign ad for the GOP ("Did you know that Ken Paxton has done a great job helping the people of Texas?"). I'm less likely to respond to one now

It's the first day of OT26! This morning, the Court denied cert in 48 firearms-law-related cases, all of which had been listed for discussion at the Long Conference last Friday. Most of the denials came in 922(g)(1) or state felon-in-possession cases. firearmslaw.duke.edu/2026/10/scot...

TERRIFYING: A three-year-old boy was found with a loaded handgun last week at a daycare in Michigan. The firearm was passed around between toddlers and discovered by a teacher. No one was harmed, but this could have been so much worse.

Does it have more resources than the Duke historical archives of gun laws? Or similar?

Gemini is very familiar with my medical history. And I can double check what it says with my doctors when I (eventually) get to see them.

I'm getting lots of blood tests these days (usually they take ten vials for all the tests they have to do, every 2 weeks). Gemini is very helpful for deciphering what all the lab results mean, especially the abbreviations. It takes days to get a question answered from my oncologist or nephrologist.

A fantastic graphic from @donnermaps.bsky.social merging two sets of data from AdImpact. The lighter-colored bars show the GOP's advantage in ad *spending* in key Senate races. The darker bars show its advantage in the number of ads actually aired. The latter is considerably lower in most races.

What we really need is an executive order from the President settling how everyone should pronounce "amicus" or "amici" for appellate briefs. It's overdue, really.

A man opened fire at his workplace in Virginia, killing two co-workers and wounding another. After a pursuit by police, the man shot and killed himself. People in this country should be able to go to work, school, a concert, places of worship — anywhere — without the threat of being gunned down.

The often unstated part of the fantasy, however, is that the woman who was saved then offers herself to the gun-toting hero out of gratitude. The hero part is just the means to an end of being entitled to have sex.

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

My particular bone to pick here is from a long-standing problem in fields like archaeology and ancient Near Eastern studies, where a cabal of profs get control of a treasure trove of important ancient manuscripts, like the Dead Sea scrolls, and sit on them for decades so they can publish exclusively

Dru Stevenson @drustevenson.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I do not have any vested interest in this particular story, but I accept your point that I should read more about exactly what happened here and whether anthropic directly profited from this particular discovery.

Dru Stevenson @drustevenson.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I see this as a separate issue. I favor more equality and wealth redistribution, but I don't think we should halt scientific progress until we achieve that (somewhat utopian) goal

Dru Stevenson @drustevenson.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Not in every circumstance, and I'm not sure this incident is really analogous to that. If the person who saw the notebook then came up with a solution that had long eluded the original researcher, I'm on the side of the one who found the solution. I think knowledge is a public good.

Dru Stevenson @drustevenson.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Seems like we're assuming a lot of human agency at anthropic in this particular incident. I think the problem is that our system of academic rewards and prestige matter more to us than scientific progress.

Dru Stevenson @drustevenson.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Sooo...we should slow down progress and scientific discoveries to make sure we as individuals get the glory we deserve?

Dru Stevenson @drustevenson.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I thought the point of research was to make discoveries like this. If AI made the breakthrough discovery, we should be celebrating it, not boycotting it to preserve our own status or prestige.

Fifteen years ago, a religious leader from Brazil, who was widely regarded as a prophet, told me I would die in a plane crash, though my interpreter was a little unclear at that moment. It was the last time I ever saw that pastor. I didn't fly for many years after that.
