Surprisingly, airway ECM remodelling was protective for lung function, and rather seems to support epithelial function. Huge amount of work by @james-ep.bsky.social @hetompkins.bsky.social and a tremendous amount of help and support from all of our collaborators at Aberdeen and Manchester

Extremely happy to see our work out in #ScienceImmunology. We show allergen-induced ECM remodelling occurs independently of IL-13 or IL-17 driven inflammation. Rather chitinase-like proteins drive airway ECM accumulation & inhibition of Ym1 can remarkably reverse it. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

If you like the lung, immune cells, tissue cells, ECM and imaging check it out! Huge effort from everyone involved both collaborators and the lab, especially @james-ep.bsky.social who worked tirelessly on analysing this complex dataset, and putting everything together in a great paper.

We show different responses in distinct ECM-cell tissue regions in the lungs that develop during chronic allergic airway inflammation. E.g. immune-stromal cell interactions in fibrillar collagen rich regions around the airway, or activated alveoli associated with neutrophils and GAGs.
