Sometimes, when someone dies, what helps me is thinking about how wonderful it is that they were even alive in the first place. Dolly was the closest you could get to an American saint. We all loved her.

Lindsey Graham spent the last decade of his life in public service as a US Senator, trying hard to be remembered as an enemy of the Constitution who worked to destroy American democracy and exhibited occasional signs that he knew why that was bad but kept doing it anyway. I will honor his choice.

A story I love about Anthony Stewart Head. Thank you to this person for sharing it on Tumblr. What a mensch.
A photo of Tony Head with a fan, standing in a barn near a horse. Tumblr post from dracofidus: If you EVER think Anthony Head is anything less than an angel then you'd best remember that I have always been a huge fan of his and we've always had a little contact over the years and he heard I'd come out as Trans and was having a hard time and that I was kind of sad that the photos I had from conventions with him were of me with long hair and no binder and they were all signed to "Sarah" and so he invited me to spend the day with him at his farm and he picked me up from the station and we just hung out and had lunch and he insisted on paying and look loads of photos and had them printed on photo paper the same day so he could sign them to Jay, along with other photos of him as Giles and Utger and he literally spent five hours chatting with me and got all the pronoun stuff right every time and then he dropped me off at the station, gave me a massive hug. Waved me through the ticket barrier and insisted I message him when I got home so he knew I was back safe.

Herman Melville on moderates, all the way back in 1857:
“You are an abolitionist, ain’t you?”
“As to that, I cannot so readily answer. If by abolitionist you mean a zealot, I am none; but if you mean a man, who, being a man, feels for all men, slaves included, and by any lawful act, opposed to nobody’s interest, and therefore, rousing nobody’s enmity, would willingly abolish suffering (supposing it, in its degree, to exist) from among mankind, irrespective of color, then am I what you say.”
“Picked and prudent sentiments. You are the moderate man, the invaluable understrapper of the wicked man. You, the moderate man, may be used for wrong, but are useless for right.”

it’s very hard to capture with words the experience of watching SIRÂT. but it’s deeply visceral, as if there’s some fundamental frequency governing the universe and you get to mainline it for a couple hours. it can be ecstatic or horrifying, alien or familiar, sometimes all at once. 13 nominees left

KOKUHO has some brilliant, vigorous, and absolutely transfixing displays of kabuki stagecraft. but it’s also stuffed with melodrama that makes the whole thing feel a bit like a chore. my cultural illiteracy is a stumbling block for sure, but it IS still 3 hours long, and sure feels that way. 19 left

20 nominees might seem like a typo, and that’s because i forgot to mention having watched the mediocre but sweet VIVA VERDI!, about a milanese retirement community for aging musicians. we should all be so lucky to live in a society that values the arts this way. 20 to go… again?

the action direction in THE LOST BUS is excellent, but the characters insist on diminishing the experience by saying words. the VFX nom is well deserved, though i wonder what sins the matchmovers committed in a past life to be handed 130 minutes of paul greengrass shaky cam. 23 nominees left!
