Populist Parties, Female Populist Leaders, and the Gendered Vote in Germany | Article | Politics and Governance

Teresa Haußmann, Aiko Wagner, Jan Philipp Thomeczek

Dr. Jan Philipp Thomeczek @drphilphil.bsky.social · 02/07/2026

6/7 Takeaway: populist competition is as much a contest over gender policy as over economics or culture. Female leadership conditions, rather than determines, gendered vote choice – policy positions are what attract female voters. 🗳️

120

Dr. Jan Philipp Thomeczek @drphilphil.bsky.social · 02/07/2026

5/7 We also include leader evaluations – and while they strongly predict overall party support, they do NOT explain the gender gap. What matters is substantive policy congruence on gender equality, not descriptive representation. 👩‍💼

110

Dr. Jan Philipp Thomeczek @drphilphil.bsky.social · 02/07/2026

4/7 Key finding: the gender gap disappears once we control for gender-related attitudes – views on gender quotas, gender-inclusive language & women's underrepresentation in parliament. These attitudes mediate gender's effect on vote choice.

100

Dr. Jan Philipp Thomeczek @drphilphil.bsky.social · 02/07/2026

3/7 Yet their electorates diverge sharply along gender lines. The AfD's gender gap was the largest of any party (+8.4 pp favoring men), while BSW attracted slightly more women. Female leadership alone clearly doesn't close the gap. 🤔

100

Dr. Jan Philipp Thomeczek @drphilphil.bsky.social · 02/07/2026

2/7 The 2025 German federal election is a unique case: two ideologically distinct populist parties, both with prominent female candidates – Weidel (AfD) & Wagenknecht (BSW) – competing under identical electoral and institutional conditions.

Dr. Jan Philipp Thomeczek @drphilphil.bsky.social · 02/07/2026

1/7 🎉 Double first: our first EtaPPP project paper & the first publication by Teresa Haußmann! 🥳 Together with @aikowagner.bsky.social we ask: why do men disproportionately vote AfD while women lean BSW, despite both parties being led by women? www.cogitatiopress.com/politicsandg...

Die Wählerwanderung aus RP wird gerade wieder verwendet um zu argumentieren, die SPD verliere stark an die AfD. Vielleicht nachvollziehbar. Großer Balken da denkt man große Verluste. Ist aber schlicht nicht so. Ich versuche die Schwierigkeit mit Wählerwanderungen mal zu erklären. 1/

Who said dictionary approaches are dead? 😃 But honestly, I think it makes perfect sense of you're doing the bare minimum to prevent political ads!

100

Dr. Jan Philipp Thomeczek @drphilphil.bsky.social · 08/03/2026

Two ad versions: "Wahl" gets banned, "politische Partei" doesn't.

120

Dr. Jan Philipp Thomeczek @drphilphil.bsky.social · 07/03/2026

Just tried it, "Partei" is apparently not defined as a political word - absolutely ridiculous! So as long as you don't mention an election directly, it's alright.

Based on my personal experience with promoting VAAs, I think that Meta is just very simply looking for some keywords like "election". "Parteien" doesn't seem to be on their list.

Agreed, just trying to understand the logic behind it.

010

The ban is for political ads, isn't it? So theoretically, if a politician is promoting a photo with a pizza, this is in accordance with the current rules?
