It's been almost a decade since I wrote this piece about Arkansas but I often think about that execution spree because of what it showed me up close about the death penalty, prisons, and torture in this country.

Despite its long history of torture, racism, wrongful convictions, and botched executions, Arkansas is still intent on carrying out the death penalty.

We absolutely should be horrified by reports of planned public executions and see them as an overt re-embrace of spectacle lynchings--while also understanding that the story of the "modern" death penalty in this country is inextricable from that history, rooted in racial violence & white supremacy.

I've been thinking and talking and writing about the death penalty for my whole adult life and the past week+ has been truly surreal and exhausting, not only because of the onslaught of horrors but because there seems to be so little historical memory of what this system is and always has been.

I'm really noticing an enthusiasm gap. I've railed for years against Dem candidates who can't inspire volunteers, and think votes just magically whip themselves. Now I'm seeing local R's struggling for volunteers. 🤞🏼 But I've been crushed too many times to say "indicator." We just work, that's all.

A nonfiction book written in, let’s say, the year 1795, is most likely still around in a library somewhere and every other work it referred to is probably accessible in some archive as well. A nonfiction book written in 2007 probably cites a bunch of urls that are dead or rotted beyond recognition.

For real, if we're using the internet, boycotting the rest of Amazon is cute and makes us feel better about ourselves, but it hardly puts a dent in what Bezos is making off us. Something like a third of the entire internet runs on .aws , from what I've been told.

OnTrac isn't *exactly* gig parcel delivery, but it's awfully close. Each location has to be run by a contractor, but drivers wear no uniforms and come in unmarked personal vehicles. The distribution hubs I'm most aware of, like Shipping Department, allow FedEx, UPS, Amazon and OnTrac at least.

There's "reselling" and then there's "using Amazon for fulfillment." Not the same thing. I can choose to shop at small businesses, or I can avoid Amazon. I can't do both.
000
DrNotta @drnotta.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
If you shop at a small business, *even if they don't use Amazon for fulfillment,* they're very likely to use a distribution hub that welcomes Amazon and OnTrac. The alternative is to shop only at big box stores. I'm not sure how much better that is, if at all.
120
DrNotta @drnotta.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
The alternative is shopping via a big box store that *now* uses a legacy carrier like FedEx or UPS. But at some point, Chewy or BestBuy or whoever might choose to start using Amazon or OnTrac, so I can't buy that small business's product at all. I long ago gave up on getting things USPS.
000
DrNotta @drnotta.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
But when you place the order, you don't know who they're using as a shipper. In fact, these days most small businesses seem to use consolidated shipping: they send their outgoing parcels to a distribution hub, and any carrier that serves that hub can deliver, including Amazon & OnTrac.

Butterbutt. An older comic.
A four-panel comic titled "yellow-rumped warbler poem". In panel 1, a yellow-rumped warbler stands on a branch in a late autumn scene, and says "Fall is here." In panel 2, the warbler watches a brown leaf fall to the ground, and says "Winter's near." In panel 3, the warbler faces the viewer as brown leaves fall, and says "Need some cheer?" In panel 4, the warbler is showing its luminous yellow rump, and cheerfully says "See my rear."

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

A few hundred noncitizen votes are a national scandal. But when states reject hundreds of thousands of ballots from eligible voters, it’s business as usual
One state rejected ballots because some voters failed to include their mother’s maiden name on the back of the return envelope.

BREAKING: SCOTUS’s Republican appointees will allow Tennessee to kill Christa Pike tonight, vacating a stay of execution entered by the Sixth Circuit this morning. The three Democratic appointees dissent.
SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES
No. 26A428
KENNETH NELSEN, WARDEN v. CHRISTA GAIL PIKE
ON APPLICATION TO VACATE STAY
[September 30, 2026]
The application to vacate stay of execution of sentence of death presented to JUSTICE KAVANAUGH and by him referred to the Court is granted. The September 30, 2026 order of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Cir-cuit, case No. 26-5864, granting a stay of execution is vacated.
JUSTICE SOTOMAYOR, with whom JUSTICE KAGAN and
JUSTICE JACKSON join, dissenting.
The State of Tennessee is set to execute Christa Pike for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. Earlier today, the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit issued a stay of Pike's execution solely to "adequately address and resolve" the issues presented in Pike's pending application for relief. Order in In re Pike, No. 26-5864, ECF Doc. 10-2, p. 2. Tennessee now asks this Court to vacate that stay and permit it to proceed with Pike's execution today. Stunningly, the Court acquiesces. Because its decision clears the way for the State to execute Pike before her still-pending legal challenges to her conviction can be properly considered, I respectfully dissent.

Campus rape is really widespread; statistics suggest a significant percent of women who go to college will be raped there; feminism opened up a good conversation about it around 2012-13; it's weird when people treated Cornell like an isolated rather than dramatic example of a pervasive problem.
