Read a book I highly recommend on the flight: The United States of Oligarchy by Casey Michel. I did not realize that Biden’s administration had done so much to tackle corruption (I did know some and that they increased funding for IRS) - another reason the oligarchs hated him and wanted him out.

There's the fact that America's billionaire class, representing a fraction of a fraction of the nation, now holds more wealth than the bottom 50 percent of America combined. There's the fact that the top 1 percent of Americans now make over twenty-six times more money than all the rest of the country. There's the fact that the share of the national income that the country's wealthiest controlled by the end of the 2010s had nearly doubled since the 1970s—but for the bottom 50 percent of Americans, it had been cut nearly in half. And there's the fact that, in 2024 alone, the net worth of the nineteen wealthiest families in America expanded by about $1 trillion total, hashing out to approximately $53
billion per family.
For those more visually inclined, just imagine a graph charting out the total assets held by Americans. Picture it as a boomerang lying on one side, with the flat, nearly horizontal edge representing the wealth holdings of America's lower and middle classes; the boomerang's joint, curving slightly upward, representing the American upper class's holdings; and the vertical line, running up as high as the eye can reach, representing the wealth now held by the richest American figures and families. The wealth of the richest Americans has torqued upward, bursting through the top of the graph, with no end in sight, completely untethered from the rest of the United States.4
Inequality has accelerated at an ever-growing pace, blowing past that of any previous eras, including the Gilded Age. By the early 2020s, it was clear that the wealthiest American cohorts now controlled a greater slice of the American economy than even the robber barons and plutocrats of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
As Zucman calculated in 2025, the share of total American household wealth that modern American oligarchs owned was now more than double the size of the wealth owned by the Rockefellers, Carnegies, and others combined. It was a burst of momentum that the
Biden
administration, working to slough off all the breathtaking corruption and abuse of power of the Trump years, eagerly built upon. A few months into his tenure, President Joe Biden issued a formal memo "establishing the fight against corruption" as a "core [U.S.] national security interest." For the first time in American history, a U.S. president had elevated corruption alongside terrorism and great power rivalry as central threats to American security, and even
American stability. "When leaders steal from their nations' citizens or oligarchs flout the rule of law, economic growth slows, inequality widens, and trust in government plummets," Biden announced. Corruption had now joined things like the Confederacy and communism among the pantheon of great anti-American threats-
—and it would now be treated as such.4
Not long later, Biden's administration published a thirty-eight-page strategy document laying out the president's vision. As the text outlined, "By effectively preventing and countering corruption and demonstrating the advantages of transparent and accountable governance, we can secure a critical advantage for the United States and other democracies." It was a wide-ranging view of all the things the administration could, and should, do: ways to launch anti-corruption programs across government, to pressure and strong-arm international offshore havens, to patch up all the rampant loopholes shredding the U.S.'s anti-money laundering efforts. It was, in many ways, the single greatest document the U.S. had ever authored about the threats of corruption, both internal and external-and a blueprint for what an administration with a competent president at the helm could accomplish.-
Nor did the Biden White House stop there. Almost overnight, new task forces popped up, directed by the White House to target all facets of modern oligarchy."There is increasing evidence that economic inequality plays a role in a whole array of attitudes and behaviors considered important to the health of democracy, including attitudes toward income inequality, social trust and tolerance, and participation in voluntary associations," he continued. "The general finding is that the more unequal a society, the less likely people are to be socially tolerant, to trust one another, to favor equality, and to participate in voluntary associations." In other words: As economic inequality takes off, nations will fray further and further, with cohesion collapsing and societies atomizing. As inequality grows, democracy implodesand often slips into something far worse.
Other scholars have confirmed as much in the years since.
In 2024, South Korean scholar Sang Kyung Lee determined that "where inequality is more severe, citizens in liberal democracies are more attracted to authoritarian leaders.”
the University of Chicago's Susan Stokes and Tenológico de Monterey's Eli Rau, backed up those findings … they tried to ascertain just how strong that relationship between democratic erosion and economic inequality truly was. And as they determined, the link between the two is "stunningly robust."
"The more unequal income distribution is in a democracy, the more at risk it is of electing a power-aggrandizing and norm-shredding head of government," the two researchers wrote. That is, as a society's inequality balloons, the likelihood of electing a strongman—a figure who will seize the levers of power, demolishing his country's democracy in the process-only grows. As the researchers confirmed, there was a direct relationship between economic inequality and the rise of modern autocracy. Few other things, like how long the democracy had actually been around, mattered. "Even wealthy and longstanding democracies, like the United States, are vulnerable if they are highly unequal," the authors wrote.oosevelt boomed. "In our day it appears as the struggle of freemen to gain and hold the right of self-government as against the special interests, who twist the methods of free government into machinery for defeating the popular will. At every stage, and under all circumstances, the essence of the struggle is to equalize opportunity, destroy privilege, and give to the life and citizenship of every individual the highest possible value both to himself and to the commonwealth."10
It was,
in other words, those monied classesthose
plutocrats, those barons of industry, those oligarchs clawing back their power across America that were the primary obstacle to progress. These "special interests" that Roosevelt had targeted as president enjoyed all manner of privileges, rights, and immunities that the rest of America had no access to. These oligarchs and their allies were not "job-creators," or bastions of free enterprise and free markets; they were simply people willing to use their power for their own purse, twisting American politics for their own financial ends to the detriment of the rest of the country.-
"The absence of effective State, and, especially, national, restraint upon unfair money-getting has tended to create a small class of enormously wealthy and economically powerful men, whose chief object is to hold and increase their power," Roosevelt said. "The prime need is to change the conditions which enable these men to accumulate power which it is not for the general welfare that they should hold or exercise." It was as if capital had a gravitational pull of its own,
Roosevelt continued, something that expanded exponentially as fortunes swelled. At a certain point, almost inevitably, that capital became political-and began to poison democracy itself, all for the benefit of its oligarchic owners.
…
As Roosevelt saw it, this was a condition that stretched far before his presidency, at least all the way back to the Civil War itself.
