If I were Donalds in FL, I would be worried. He's a weak candidate who wouldn't have survived the "put your name on the form" phase of the primaries in any other state. He'll win, but each downballot loss will look like his fault. He's polling at +2 in a state where R's run North Korea numbers.

My new correlation-based political theory is that, if your state's borders contain a right angle, xenophobes are a constituency.

Offhandedly referred to Cicero while discussing Cleopatra as "Cic-you-when-you're-down-ero" and now you all have to live with that in your heads too. (This also requires you to adopt the "C is actually K in Latin" theory sorry.)

Peter Thiel is a living argument for "maybe you *should* have to pass a test before we let you read the advanced stuff to ensure you don't go crazy." Like, he's out here making the Monastic Gatekeeper Theory of Information palatable.

Listen, I'm not listening to Choosin' Texas and I have no idea who the artist is, but not out of contrarianism. I just don't like the genre, and every Country and Western musician's name sounds like a one-off Star Wars character so I can't actually remember who's who.

My youtube mix playlists keep sneaking Lisa's Sawadika in there so now all my ads are for McDonalds in Thai. Like, hey algo, *you* made me listen to the song, and now you're like "anyway you're definitely Thai and need crispy nuggets." Last week I was a pregnant Latina HVAC tech.

Spent an hour writing an annoyed email to my undergrad institution's president for announcing the sudden closure of the oldest natural history museum in the new world. The "how did you run the 200-year-old Fun Dinosaur Bones Museum into the ground in 15 years?" rhetorical approach seemed necessary.

When tofu first got introduced into mainstream US food culture, health food brands went in hard for it and put it in everything as a healthy alternative to meat rather than presenting it as its own thing. The result was a generational rejection of tofu on principle. Anyway this is about LLMs.

I once jokingly explained AI to my 80+ year old mom by saying "they realized the devil wasn't real, so they built him from scratch and trained him on everything everyone has ever said--and as far as he's concerned, he just wants to help us" but I was thinking John Milton devil, not protestant devil.

The thing about actual Roman damnationes memoriarum is that they didn't really obliterate all memory of a bad emperor. None of our sources are afraid to talk about these figures. It wasn't truly about forgetting the guy, but about abolishing his (positive) public commemoration.

The thing about every Effective Altruist I knew in college is that they aren't reliable people, since the combo of "I can instrumentalize and use people if the outcome is good" and "I am smart enough to correctly predict a future that justifies my actions" is a gateway drug to being a sociopath.

Trumism vs. EA is just the Spiderman Meme, but it's just guys going "what if I justified my own predilections and greed, Ayn Rand-style, by claiming it's for the good of the future and that I get to decide that because I'm the smartest person and everyone else is dumb."

God the entire AI effective altruist sex cult thing would be so funny if like 40% of the US economy didn't depend on all of us pretending this is normal and fine. Thankfully the "your speculative economy is actually a bunch of cranks pursuing eccentricities" isn't a new thing.

You know it just fully occurred to me that the crop failures in my casual vegetable garden are not, in fact, exclusively a skill issue. It's heat stress from climate change. The soil's good, but the average summer temp is whack--our growing/climate zone has been reclassified twice since 2021.

At this point, it kinda feels like "we're building massive, highly-concentrated AI infrastructure specifically in places vulnerable to extreme weather located near people, who also hate this, and are ignoring the alternatives" feels like a choice. Or an elaborately stupid property insurance scam.

More disturbing trend: the trend of "juicy" boneless dark meat fried chicken. I prefer dark meat, but without the bones, it trips the autonomic "this fried chicken is undercooked" texture alarm.

It's telling that it's never the (sane) literature scholars doing it, too. Once you get deep into lit analysis, the required attention to narrative structure and inherent human perceptual filter makes it clear that doing it to real life invites the delusion that real life is story-shaped.

In the quest for an ethnonym for euroamericans, it is very funny to me that they just keep running headlong into the institutional white supremacy wall with the terminology. Like, all of the choices sound like branded credit card tiers with perks and the perks are racism.

"A person who is armed is equivalent to a person aiming a gun at you" is the kind of opinion held by either: 1. someone who has never actually had a gun aimed at them 2. a cop who has definitely shot a civilian

It's great for the humanities (esp. adaptation studies) that folks are getting into the Odyssey and that the discourse is no longer just right-wing chuds trying to claim Classical Civ as their personal fiefdom like Penelope's rapacious suitors, but like, the source material is a very vague old poem.

To be fair, in most East Coast cities, this would get your group called suburbanites (derogatory) or tourists and possibly lead to a passerby Doing the Thing (pointedly colliding with the outermost member of the group and then saying "I'm walking here!" etc.)
