This contraction is horrible to witness. We should also be aware that material moves in to fill the gaps. Individuals calling themselves historians, Facebook groups, courses, YouTube channels, AI generated content; a lot of it is sketchy, inaccurate, and maddening as hell. Yet there are gems too.

Roman fans loved sports merch too! This 2,000-year-old Roman glass cup from Colchester is a chariot racing souvenir. A Latin inscription hails ‘Cresces’ the winner! 🏆 It also bids farewell to his three losing opponents, Hierax, Olympus, and Antiocus! 👋 👋 👋 📷 by me #EpigraphyTuesday #Archaeology
My photo shows a translucent pale green cylindrical glass beaker on a grey surface with a dark background in a British Museum display case. It is mould-blown with raised relief decoration in three bands around the cup. The two lower bands of decoration depict a scene from the chariot racing stadium, with four competing quadrigae (four-horse chariots) and their charioteers. A relief inscription in the mould design runs around the upper band recording that a charioteer named Cresces beat his opponents; Hierax, Olympaeus and Antilochus.

Latin inscription: HIERAXVAOLYMPAEVAANTILOCEVACRESCESAV
Transliteration: Hierax va(le) Olymp(a)e va(le) Antiloce va(le) Cresce(n)s av(e)
Translation: Hierax farewell; Olympus farewell; Antiocus farewell; hail Cresces

It measures 8.4 cm in height.

Chariot racing between Red, White, Blue & Green teams was a hugely popular Roman spectator sport. Mould-blown glass, such as this sports cup, could be mass produced to meet demand from fans for souvenirs of their sporting heroes.

Excellent blog. The sixteenth century in Scotland, particularly activity on the Anglo-Scottish border, has been dominated for too long by what I tend to call the George MacDonald Fraser ("The Steel Bonnets") School of History. I'm particularly interested to see the "rough wooing" phrase debunked.

My friend Sara posted this about the superb care her father received from with Alex Pretti Absolutely heartbreaking
Photos of Alex Pretti with Sara’s caption:

On August 16th at approximately 10:00 pm
I received a call from the ICU at the VA saying my Dad had sepsis and needed to be intubated to stay alive so Josh and I headed in. We were greeted by the kindest, most calming and warm soul who helped us understand what was happening and showed deep care for us and my Dad. He continued to show utmost patience and kindness over the next few days as my Dad remained in the ICU and we were there continually. It was Alex Pretti, the man shot today by ICE. If you see this video and don't think it's murder, I don't understand your thinking and ask you to question your heart. He was out there trying to help and protect and from the little we knew of him, it doesn't surprise me he was not afraid to be on the front lines of this horrible scene in our Minneapolis. Weeping for his family and all those at the VA who no longer get to work with him or receive his care.

Linguists start compiling first ever complete dictionary of ancient Celtic
More than 1,000 words used as far back as 325BC to be collected for insight into past linguistic landscape It is not likely to be a hefty volume because the vast majority of the material has been lost in the mists of time. But the remnants of a language spoken in parts of the UK and Ireland 2,000 years ago are being collected for what is being billed as the first complete dictionary of ancient Celtic. The dictionary will not be huge because relatively few words survive, but experts from Aberystwyth University say they expect they will end up with more than 1,000 words. Continue reading...

'We can be old and new, broken and whole, and that is what makes a writer.' The wonderful @drmabibby.bsky.social has the honour of being my guest on the 100th episode of Northern Voices today talking about horses, history and Northern heritage. on.soundcloud.com/BoMDcRg4bXiU...
Miriam stands next to a white horse with a white mane that is nuzzling her hand. Behind her is a metal gate and a green field in the background. Miriam is wearing a white trilby with a grey trim, a black suit and lilac shirt. She has fair hair and is smiling at the camera. The Tyne Bridge is pictured in the centre of the frame over a still, reflective River Tyne in Newcastle, UK. Either side of the bridge are buildings with a warmer glow as the sun rises. The words Northern Voices in white lettering feature in the bottom centre of the image. There is a graphic of four balloons in the bottom left corner – red, orange, blue and green – and a big cartoon pink and yellow '100' in the top right.
