Dems in Illinois have a supermajority that they are going to expand and Republicans deserve that level of defeat for what they did to the state under Rauner Maybe you should have helped override some of those budget vetos so that we had a budget. But no! You wanted to torpedo state finances instead

I spoke with Astead Herndon this week about the ICE incident in Evanston last weekend and what the reaction has been this week for his newsletter, The Midterms, Actually Link here: americaactually.substack.com/p/how-latino...
What I’m hearing
This week I called Matthew Eadie, a reporter at Evanston Now, who has been covering an ICE stop in Evanston, Illinois that has since attracted national attention. On the morning of Sunday, September 20, federal agents stopped a man walking on Howard Street. He turned out to be a US citizen, and not the person they were looking for. Agents reportedly left him on the ground with injuries to his head, neck, and teeth. DHS says he “refused to identify himself. Now the community is demanding answers.”

What’s the community reaction been?

"People are really furious. If you remember the fall here — Operation Midway Blitz, the heightened Border Patrol enforcement across the Chicago area, Gregory Bovino parading around the streets with camera crews, the protests at the Broadview processing center — people here were very aware of how impactful it was. It was also happening around the elections, so it was prominent news everywhere and everybody was talking about it."

NEW: about 48 hours after this incident in Evanston, DHS had provided a statement, saying the man was “not cooperative” after agents identified themselves and said they “later left the scene without further incident once the individual finally identified himself.”
On September 20, during a targeted enforcement operation in Evanston, Illinois, ICE encountered an individual who resembled the target. ICE approached the individual and immediately identified themselves as law enforcement. The individual was given lawful commands but was not cooperative and refused to identify himself. ICE officers relied on their training and later left the scene without further incident once the individual finally identified himself.

ICE has authority for lawful arrests where authorized under 8 USC 1357. Law enforcement officers use ‘reasonable suspicion’ to investigate immigration status and probable cause to make arrests consistent with the statute and the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Supreme Court has already vindicated us on these practices.

DHS enforcement operations are highly targeted, and officers do their due diligence. We know who we are targeting ahead of time. If and when we do encounter individuals subject to arrest, our law enforcement is trained to ask a series of well-determined questions to determine status and removability.
