Really interesting that all these right-wing fascists decided that purging voter rolls would keep them in power all at the same time, wonder who suggested that idea to them.

Whenever anyone that the internet has formed a parasocial relationship with does something bad and is outed, you are doomed to see a bunch of spectators who clearly haven't thought very much about this stuff before try to reconstruct penal theory from first principles, every time.

"You can't have restorative justice without legal punishment, though!" That's exactly the point being made. "What does restorative justice for these people look like?" -> It looks like nothing, like jack shit, in the absence of legal consequences.

Benjamin Leggett @drelbs.online · 06/10/2026
A basic principle of any justice system is that there are plenty of crimes that you can't ameliorate at all. But you must still decide what to do with those people.
010
Benjamin Leggett @drelbs.online · 06/10/2026
Absolutely. And I think one of the really important things that article pushes you towards is that you actually need a proper system of legal punishment for this stuff or there can *never be* restorative justice.

It's a rounding error for their net worth, but actually freeing up that much cash out of their leveraged debt to bribe people with is harder, I bet. It's not just that the price is low, it's that their wealth is borrowed.

You can tell Control Resonant wasn't made in America by the way there are billboards all across Manhattan promoting awareness about climate change, unionization, and suing your employer for wrongful termination.

rotating an idea that halo is the defining media franchise of the 21st century. i look at how its been mismanaged for 20 years, no one working on it has a job, its games don't even sell anymore but. they cant let it die. the IP must continue. everything becomes halo on a long enough timeline

Capitalism is an evolving virus that ultimately desires to keep itself alive, destroy opposition, and optimize its own function to a vanishing point of total annihilation of everything that isn't itself. AI cultists claim to be afraid of things like this, but carefully scope their fears to AI.

Benjamin Leggett @drelbs.online · 25/09/2026
Telling you that AI will ultimately destroy us all while remaining mum about the fact that all of their fears are also true of the artificial system (capitalism) that inexorably compels them to keep building it is an intentional distraction away from that artificial system's harms and ultimate goals

Benjamin Leggett @drelbs.online · 25/09/2026
All of the systemic dooms that AI cultists claim to be afraid of (paperclip theory, roko's basilik) are already demonstrably true of the capitalist systems that act as the superstructure driving LLM development.

I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

werner herzog on AI filmmaking (from here www.indiewire.com/features/int...)
Q: A couple years ago at IDFA, I saw this movie "About a Hero," which is this partly Al-generated hybrid documentary that tries to recreate the atmosphere of your films.

A: The intention of this young filmmaker was never to remake any [of my films], but making something in the spirit. And I immediately said, "You will fail. It is such a stupid idea. It's phenomenally, abysmally stupid. I will not take part in it." He wanted me to explain things and have my voice in it.
I said, "You are alone. There's such a thing as free speech, which I respect. So go ahead and fail." And it is a failure, period.
It's so standardized that Al can step in because there's not real storytelling. It's mimicry of something that has happened before. And I welcome Al to replace all the idiots who are into nothing but repeating, repeating, repeating until it's ad nauseam.
When it's ad nauseam, please, please, please let Al step in and do the job.

It's pretty obviously optimistic, not fact-based, and requires ignoring (not speculatively addressing, but explicitly ignoring) a whole lot of current realities. So I don't think it really ranks.

You do have to offer a positive left-wing populist platform as an alternative to a negative right-wing populist platform. Every time. For every policy. The center-left would prefer this was *not* the case, because they value policy inaction, but it is the case, and is inescapable.

Biggest problem with modern Looney Tunes, even COYOTE VS ACME (which I like) is that Bugs Bunny has been sanded down into a mascot. You watch him in the 40s or 50s and he's a freaky lil dress-up pervert who is down for anything. Assigned diva at birth. Nowadays, he's just a regular guy. Not my Bugs.
