The maxims are individualized priorities where laws are universal and applied universally, whereas a maxim can contain a universal law, it is most often up to the individual to act in them. I hope I am interpreting that right.

I might be misremembering. But they did a study where the kids had a choice of 10 candy and were given 5 free pieces. The kids were confident in their choices. The other group had more expensive options but the same limit and were not so firm in their decisions.

The problem is people make joy a goal and not a momentary thing and when it is met. They increase the requirement to feel joy little by little until it is unfeasible in attainment. Like how love isn't a feeling per se but is more akin to a promise. Or that is how I see it.
