In From My Mother’s Back: A Journey from Kenya to Canada, Njoki Wane introduces us to her mother, a woman of deep wisdom, and to all the richness of a life lived between two countries. A celebrated professor and award-winning teacher, she shares her journey from a Catholic girls’ boarding school in rural Kenya to standing in front of a lectern at the University of Toronto. Along the way she reflects on the heritage that was taken from her as a child and the strengths and teachings of the family that pulled her through and helped her to not only succeed as a scholar, but to reclaim her culture, her history and even her name.

Horrifying Canadian higher ed news: York University, one of the country’s major R1s, is apparently suspending admission to a number of key programs (including GWS, languages, classics, and enviro biology)—very likely auguring cuts. This appears to be straight out of the West Virginia playbook.
York University is suspending admissions to over a dozen programs in the fall, likely planning to shut them down completely in the next few years. Faculty member shares this list that went over the YU Faculty Association council email list. Astonishing

California forcibly sterilized hundreds of women. Then, it 'allowed' them to apply for compensation. But only ≈15% of the affected women have gotten compensation so far. Many were denied. And the deadline to apply/appeal is in just 10 days, leading to an unfair rush many don't know about:
