🚨 HEADS UP: If you haven't submitted a comment on the OMB proposal yet, there's still time - but it's running out! There are only 1 days left to push back against Russell Vought's attempt to give political appointees unprecedented control over federal research funding. Take Action: zurl.co/eoQwY
Graphic from Stand Up for Science urging action on a federal funding proposal. Large text reads: "1 Days Left" and "Help Us Stop Vought From Destroying American Science." A portrait of Russell Vought appears beside the U.S. Capitol. A banner along the bottom reads: "Submit a comment on the OMB proposal | Link in bio to take action." The Stand Up for Science logo appears in the top left.

This is the most jaw-dropping part of Princeton/BP/Wedges paper scandal: that the scientists funded by BP said outright that their job "was to invent a future where the fossil fuel industries have not disappeared yet climate change is being forcefully addressed, and this is still our job." 1/3
On the other hand, it is fair to say that CMI participants from Princeton and BP were generally not surprised with the strength of the fossil fuel industries in confronting climate change. Indeed, a premise from the outset was that CMI's job was to invent a future where the fossil fuel industries have not
disappeared yet climate change is being forcefully addressed, and this is still our job.

I expect it’s the same everywhere; republicans have had a raging boner for privatizing the postal service as long as I’ve been alive. All so some already wealthy bastards can get government contracts to do an even worse job and take more money away from the people who do the work.

And here’s the thing: closed loop water systems are 100% possible. They just require a bit more investment. Similarly, powering data centers off clean energy is also 100% possible. In some cases, it’s even cheaper! This disastrous overconsumption is not a technological failure: it’s a policy one.

Relevant to today's conversation about AI's inherent sexism, here's an email from cognitive psychologist and early AI theorist Roger Schank, arguing to Epstein that women can't be truly intelligent, because they care too much about what other people think.

Subject: there is a simpler explanation about women and intelligence
intelligence comes about in part from real focus (goal-directed
(this is why you have the absent minded professor caricature)
it is a rare woman who is not first and foremost focussed on what
thinking and feeling about her
hard to be brilliant if you are worrying if you look fat or why
