There are no expansive, glowing eyes in this Hubble image. This “face” is the result of two galaxies that collided head-on and have begun to intertwine. They will merge completely in 1-2 billion years. For now, they make up a ring galaxy, a rare classification. Credit: NASA/ESA 🔭 🧪 🎃
Galaxy merger that resembles a face with large, glowing yellow eyes. At the center are two bright white, fuzzy ovals that appear side by side. These white ovals are the cores of the galaxies. The right galaxy’s core has a brown ring of dust and gas around it and appears fully face-on. The left galaxy is appears at a slight angle, but is mainly face-on. Together, they appear to make up the “eyes” of the “face.” Outside this core are lanes of blue gas and dust, which take the shape of a rough oval, and are about as large as a head when compared to the size and appearance of the galaxies. Strewn throughout the image are many fuzzy streaks and dots, which are galaxies and stars respectively.

Several local factors — including the minimum temperature reached in autumn and the water level in lakes and ponds in winter — could be key for predicting the potential of an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian flu in Europe, according to a study in Scientific Reports. #medsky 🧪
go.nature.com
Predictiveness and drivers of highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks in Europe - Scientific Reports
Avian Influenza (AI) outbreaks are on an increasing trajectory. This disease carries a substantial economic burden, resulting in considerable losses to farmers with profound impacts on economies. As the outbreaks continue in birds and other unusual host species, further virus evolution and spillover to humans’ risk is anticipated to grow and potentially involve into new pandemics. Despite this, the underlying drivers of the outbreaks remain elusive. We develop machine learning models capable of predicting HPAI events in Europe dynamically uncovering the critical determinants of their onset. Temperature, water index, vegetation index, and poultry density play pivotal roles, with their importance coming into play at different times of the year. Temperature, water index, and vegetation index are important in the ecology of pathogen transmission as well as environmental ecological processes while water index determines how birds aggregate at different locations depending on the season of the year. Combining these drivers, the outbreak pattern is predicted with an accuracy of 94% for model two (M2). A true out of sample with the same model yielded 88% accuracy highlighting its predicting capability. These insights lay a robust foundation for elucidating the intricate landscape of AI outbreaks, offering valuable insights for proactive preventive interventions to mitigate spillover.

This is spot on. Farage doesn’t want to stop the boats… yet… They’re his daily ‘Breaking Point’ poster made flesh… His political strength relies on the hatred, prejudice and disinformation he can whip up on beach watch. Humane solutions scare the hell out of him. @adamboulton.bsky.social The iPaper
Don't be fooled - Farage doesn't actually want to stop the boats

Flanked by the Emmanuel Macron, President of France, Sir Keir Starmer boasted that
the Government was taking action while others were "taking pictures". No prizes for he was referring to.
That very day, Nigel Farage was out on the briny with a GB News film crew, fishing for mackerel while observing French coastguards shepherding the handover of 78 migrants from their "rib" inflatable to the safety of Dover-bound UK Border Force.
"We are witnessing a crime yet everyone seems happy," Farage almost chortled. Yet the leader of Reform UK seemed happiest of all. Far from stopping the boats, Farage needs them to keep coming if he is to achieve his ambition of becoming the next British Prime Minister.
Waterborne migrants have been
his most spectacular political recruiting sergeants ever since he began taking videos off the south coast back in May 2020.
In their various manifestations
- Ukip, Brexit, Reform UK - the parties Farage leads are always been negative, destructively focussed. They aim to exploit widespread dissatisfaction with the state of the world. The solutions they offer are sketchy and impractical.
For once the Prime Minister slotted one past Farage at Prime Minister's Questions this week:
"He has no interest in fixing the problem because he wants to milk it and exploit it. That's the truth about him and his party."
Farage's strategy is to blame anyone he can…..

Reform UK's interests are best served by denouncing and stuffing up any productive collaboration with allies in Europe or more broadly. Reform
UK has yet to produce its
definitive policy on immigration.
This side of a general election
Farage knows that Reform UK's best option is to sabotage the Government's gradualist, co-operative efforts to turn the tables, helping to ensure that the boats keep coming.
