Most of 90s teen TV is at The Emmys. Buffy! Angela Chase! Felicity! And I’m sure Lindsay Weir is there somewhere. Plus Ally McBeal for a bonus.

The thing about taking a beach vacation from academia is that being stuck in the airport overnight because of flight cancellation undoes the stress release. Having a tan in the summer isn’t much of a benefit.

Writing a scholarly book about pop culture sometimes means spending 3 hours looking for a quote from Lloyd Bridges (from a skin diving magazine no less) then contextualizing it, then deciding not to use it. What treasure hunt will happen today?

As we go down the Creative Arts Emmy list, we’ve been watching a lot of documentaries. Shooter did not care as much as we did for the ones about Martin Short, John Candy, Mel Brooks, Martin Scorsese or Jayne Mansfield (all good!) but he was mesmerized by Ocean with David Attenborough.

I do love that AI inadvertently confirms that our brains work like a muscle, too — use it or lose it. In this way relying on AI is like using a robot to lift weights, like running a marathon in a Honda Civic. You get nothing out of it.

This course draws from the award-winning book Data Feminism (MIT Press, 2020), challenging students to consider how examining questions of gender, power, and justice can transform the way we visualize data. Drawing from the rich history of feminist activism and critical thought, we will learn to recognize and counter biases in conventional visualization practices while developing skills to create more ethical, inclusive, and socially responsible visualizations of our own. The course brings real-world examples of data visualization in conversation with theoretical frameworks that question whose perspectives are included (or not) in data science and data communication, illustrating the need for approaches that employ visualization to amplify minoritized perspectives and draw attention to issues of equity and justice.
