Marine microbial ecology, corals shallow to deep sea, snorkeling to submersibles. Happiest when a little salty. Basis for characters in 2 fiction novels. Listens to '80s big hair bands when working in lab.

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

The human who finally picked up had no clue what I was talking about when I tried to explain, so I suggested they might want to have a chat with their tech support folks.

Thought I'd do a 'little' thread of all the Warped Ocean pins individually! I'm really proud of how this collection turned out! 😊 I'll start with all the gold ones so here's the gold-plated Mandarinfish! abistevens.etsy.com/listing/4572... #artShop #darkArt
A photo of a 2.5" wide gold-plated hard-enamel pin. It's my Mandarinfish design: the fish in profile with lots of extra eyes worked into its usual blue body pattern. The fish is in shades of orange and red with blue highlights and screenprinted details.

While I do have sediment from that deep in my freezer, I mostly “look” at who’s there using DNA. My colleagues Amanda Demopoulos & Jill Bourque are the deep-sea mud goddesses who pick sediments apart under the microscope to ID fun fauna like worms & wee crustaceans!

No one had to think super hard about how to make a washing machine useful. A telephone. A vacuum cleaner. So why do our bosses have to constantly challenge us to find something, anything, for which AI might be helpful If your customers don’t find your product useful, that’s a you-problem

academics should be slow, steady, scholars who produce solid, original contributions to specialized fields of research but also: if you want security you'd better be a personable star who can explain everything to anybody in a few small words and serve as the face of your institution's PR campaign

And... that's all, folks. San Francisco State University is shutting down its Estuary and Ocean Science Center, the only marine lab on the shores of San Francisco Bay.
screenshot of an email that starts with:

"Dear Friends of the Estuary & Ocean Science Center,

I’m very sad to say that SFSU has started the process of shutting down the Estuary & Ocean Science Center / Romberg Tiburon Campus. The doors will be closed by the end of September. As you know, SFSU has been saying for years that they can no longer afford to operate the RT campus, with continued declines in enrollment at the university. The 53-acre site, with all its deferred maintenance, was required to become fully self-supporting. Unfortunately, maintenance and operation funds have been very difficult to find, even as grant funding has grown for our projects, programs, and student training."

I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
