Y’all, Washington state has some real doozies on the ballot this year. Like lowering taxes for people making more than $1M, and banning trans girls from sports, and making it harder for kids to report domestic abuse. There needs to be a “fuck no” option on the ballot rather than just “no.”

This is possibly the worst thing I have ever read. It should be the only headline on every news source. It won't be. If you've experienced sexual assault, maybe don't read the details.

Horrifying: Arizona Democratic congressional candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia was raped by a man after he knocked her out. Another man approached her to do the same. “She began swinging her foot at him. ‘Not even worth it,’ she heard the man say as he moved away.”

One of the Cornell students accused of gang rape, Scott Kretzschmar, denies it and says through his attorney that they are going to “confront” the survivor through the court system. I can already tell you that means victim-blaming, DARVO, and smears. She is going to need a lot more of our support.

My middle-school Spanish teacher in the very-much-not-Southern state of Utah used "y'all" all the time to translate second-person plural verb forms, because *everybody knew what it meant*, even though easily 95+% of the class hadn't been anywhere near the South for years, if ever.

One I remember from a guide to pronouncing a foreign language many years ago: '"ng" as in "singer", not as in "finger"' To be completely fair, that merger is less common in this part of the world than cot-caught, but that suggestion _completely_ threw me for a loop at the time.

Today I fixed a plumbing leak in my lab with a $3 part and my team was surprised. Why didn’t I call the landlord (lol)? And where did I learn to do that? A surprising amount of chemistry lab work is just plumbing. Sure, sometimes its gas or vacuum, but it’s all pipes and pumps and valves, really.

Yeah, it's a real shock. What is remarkable is that 4 is the total number, it's not just domestic, it's international as well. This will (I predict) have unusual impact of global academia as well.

TBF, that number (about 1/4 of our chem major graduates) was very much a statistical outlier, but the underlying concern is real. U of I accepted ~25 Ph. D. candidates in its chemistry department in 1992. For a similarly prestigious school to only accept 4 or 5 is a huge change.

My grad year, 1992, I was one of 4 students who went to the University of Illinois as Ph. D. candidates in chemistry. My graduating class was only 150 students, of whom about 15 were chemistry majors. In 2026, Harvard plans to admit the same number (4) from *the entirety of U.S. academia*.

In my case, fighting “my brain going there” with that particular letterform was strongest while reading part of Robert Boyle’s work on the air pump from the 17th century. Scientists of the time didn’t use the word “piston” for the moving cylinder in a pump. Boyle called it the “sucker”.

Best I managed to get of the Lunar occultation of Venus yesterday. Missed the key moments due to clouds and fighting with gear. It looked sooo much better in the eyepiece of my other telescope. I could see Venus fully resolved, and lunar surface details more clearly.
Image of the planet Venus, seen as a small bright gibbous shape, very close to the right of the face of the moon, seen as a pale blue arc spanning the left side of the frame, both against a moderately darker blue background.

STEM guy here who moved from chemistry research to software development when the chemistry research career fell apart. Software development is easier. I won't say it's easy, because it's not, at least not if you want to do it right and care about quality. But definitely not as hard.

Intellectually, I'm fine with something oxidizing oxygen to +2. As a sentient being possessing a lot of oxygen at -2 (as well as a bunch of other things far more easily oxidized than oxygen), I'd prefer such oxidizing agents to stay very, very far away indeed.

David Nash @dpnash1.bsky.social · 05/06/2026
One rule I adhered to when choosing a lab was “avoid substances that can oxidize oxygen”. CS2 being ultra-flammable was bad enough; I did not want to be close to anything that thought every material in the lab was a fuel.

David Nash @dpnash1.bsky.social · 05/06/2026
Yiiiiiikes. What experiment was that poor undergrad doing that needed CS2?

David Nash @dpnash1.bsky.social · 05/06/2026
I only found out *after* leaving that lab that CS2 (which occasionally did leak a bit despite our best efforts) has an autoignition temp of 90 C. Not flash point, autoignition. It only barely escapes being called pyrophoric and is theoretically ignitable by *steam*.

Heh. For my Ph.D. I did 1H NMR under high pressure, using a pressure vessel in the magnet bore, so absolutely no H atoms allowed in the pressure fluid (even deuterated liquids had too much 1H). What common room-temp liquid worked? Yep. CS2. Was the only practical option, and we all hated it.

SLC airport is only barely "international". It wasn't all that long ago that it counted as "international" only because it had flights to Canada and Mexico. "International" flights to and from destinations other than Canada/Mexico are sparse (looks like London, Amsterdam, Paris, + 1 or 2 others).
