i don't weigh in on the design talk much here, but the contact damage talk has me feeling a lot of stuff because of how i'd gone with (typically) no contact damage for blade sight

You can remove this, but removing this creates a vacuum that needs to be replaced by something else. Your enemy design otherwise better be tight as hell, or you better have other ways to force the player to engage with combat. The general idea that it's just 'archaic' is so silly. ITS A PLATFORMER.

found out on accident that hikaru/akane can extend their options by pressing the powerup button while the meter is on the option power spot (an already at max options) (it works in both gokujou parodius and sexy parodius (on arcade))
