Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your CV? Scientist: My PhD supervisor left in my 3rd year, I tried to carry on but then was asked to leave. I spent ~5 years working as a bouncer until a mate came back from the US to start his lab &, against all advice, hired me as his tech. Interviewer:

Very sad to hear that Margaret Hamilton has passed away. Here's a short thread about her role in the Apollo mission, and her lesser-known work on the simulations that led to the discovery of Chaos Theory. 🧪 👩‍🔬 ⚛️

“Coming up with solutions and new ideas was an adventure. Dedication and commitment were a given. Mutual respect was across the board.” This is fabulous - especially highlighting code annotations like “We’re off to see the wizard”. RIP Margaret Hamilton a true hero & role model for these times.

As a sort of reverse measure of their efficacy - with the curtains fully closed, if the light for the individual pods is turned up to full the light will still not leak out into the rest of the imaging suite.

I absolutely admit it is not the same conditions, as our facility is purpose built for fluorescent microscopy - with matt black walls & floors and controlled/reduced ambient lighting - but the set-up of blackout floor-to-ceiling curtains for the individual pods are incredibly effective as well.

I loved 'The Sweater' & the story it told. 'We were all Rocket Richards' - though I have to admit as an immigrant kid in Saskatoon my first hockey sweater (I think bought from the Eaton's catalogue) was a No. 4 Boston Bruins Bobby Orr sweater.

Most strikingly, Honeycomb Synapses are selectively vulnerable in models of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, revealing a new pathological hallmark and a fresh direction for understanding this fatal neurodegenerative disease.

These Honeycomb synapses combine chemical neurotransmission with gap junctions embedded inside the perforations, forming a highly organised hybrid electrical–chemical synapse built for speed and reliability.

This represents 6 years of tireless work from Matthew - from first noting these large unique structures in the mouse spinal cord to characterising them as a previously unrecognised synapse type in the monosynaptic stretch reflex - the circuit behind the classic knee‑jerk response.

Trump White House misspells “United” on the official “super intelligence” document with AI executives. Instead of “President of the United States,” it reads: “President of the Unites States.” Nothing says “super intelligence” quite like misspelling the name of the country.
Screenshot of a Truth Social post from Donald J. Trump’s verified @realDonaldTrump account displaying a signed document titled “Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities.” The document outlines voluntary AI safety and oversight commitments for companies developing frontier artificial intelligence models. On the right side are signatures and company labels for leaders including Sundar Pichai of Google, Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, Greg Brockman of OpenAI, Elon Musk of xAI, and Jensen Huang of Nvidia. Near the center-right, Donald J. Trump’s large signature appears above the printed title identifying him as president. The title contains a noticeable typo: instead of “President of the United States,” it reads, “President of the Unites States,” misspelling “United” as “Unites.”

NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.
