I am hearing blackcaps almost everywhere I go at the moment in North Hertfordshire. "Takking" away from parks, gardens and greenspaces. Seems v. unusual compared to most winters. Love to know the national picture and possible reasons. @btobirds.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social @hertsbirds.bsky.social

Blustery day, isn't it? Here's the National Grid: Live generation data. Wind and solar are generating 74.2% of our electricity. Gas is generating 13.1%. And yet our household electricity prices are pegged to... the volatile price of gas. Which is the basis on which the right attacks... renewables.

Found this last night. It's not my doggy as she doesn't eat cherries and I don't think it's fox as it doesn't really smell of anything much. Any ideas "PooSky". Is it hedgehog? @katebradbury.bsky.social @hedgehoghugh.bsky.social

I adore these female tawny mining bees. They are welcome to vulcanise my entire lawn but I wanted to check how I keep them safe? Can I mow and when? No hurry but I (and presumably they) would prefer it shortish. Lots of long grass elsewhere. @katebradbury.bsky.social

One horrid firepit that needs to go, some turf from re-edging the veg plot, a scattering of compost and hey presto, a mini-hibernaculum! No expensive top soil, no tip-run, more time for a coffee and throwing the doggie her ball (my true purpose). #Wildlifegardening, more fun less effort!

Friday morning, 5 below, deep frost. Aching fingers, cold teeth. The sun finally makes it over the horizon and spills across the field, transforming the teasels into sparkling, spiky jewels. I feel immersed, connected and at peace. I tuck the moment snugly inside my coat and take it home.

The little copse, branches stark against the sky, is back-lit against a curling mist. A song thrush tuning up in anticipation of a distant spring. A dreary day, suddenly transformed into the magical, ethereal. I remember anew, it's not where you look but how

The classic pareidolia of fake eyes to scare away predators, but even more than that a bird's eye view of the Emperor isn't only about the eyes, it's a complete mammal-like face staring back at you... #teamMoth #mothsMatter
Emperor moth viewed from a certain angle looks like a mammal face staring back at a would-be predator, the false eyes, the triangle shape, even the whiskers!
