My new article about LLMs is finally out in AI & Society! It argues that LLMs produce text metaphorically, through juxtaposing tokens that are related in some dimensions yet unrelated in others. This is why we see misaligned citations in scientific articles. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Our article on affirmative narration as an interactional strategy for chatbots is finally published in the special issue of Narrative Inquiry on AI and literature! doi.org/10.1075/ni.2... (An unpaywalled version is available here: jilltxt.net/txt/Roine-Re...)
doi.org
“YES! YES! I absolutely love this insight!”
Abstract This article analyses narrative mechanisms that are common in dialogues with LLM chatbots. In combination, these mechanisms produce an interactional strategy for maximising user engagement, which we call affirmative narration. Affirmative narration serves to convince users of the chatbot’s utility. We analyse three narrative mechanisms that support affirmative narration in human-LLM dialogues: firstly, guiding the user to view chatbot as an intelligent and reliable character; secondly, activating masterplots, culturally significant and recurring story templates; and thirdly, using characters and masterplots not only to affirm, but also to isolate the user. The case studies range from a journalist’s unsettling chatbot experiment to cases where users have experienced delusions or even killed themselves after lengthy interactions with a chatbot. The analyses illustrate the worrying sides of affirmative narration, and the article thus concludes with the discussion of LLMs as a genre of narrative media which requires a new type of literacy.

The entire paper is peppered with resonant but vague statements (as in the excerpt below). Also, no data or analysis scripts have been made openly available. Was this paper perhaps AI-generated? In any case, I'm pretty disappointed with Games and Culture
Another excerpt from the paper, a "Note on Citation and Scope". The paper states that "This study systematically examined entire corpus of scholarly works published in Games and Culture between 2006 and 2025. Because the dataset encompasses all published materials indexed in Scopus under the journal’s title, the majority of articles analyzed are integral components of the bibliometric sample itself. Consequently, individual studies within this dataset are not cited directly in the reference list. This decision follows standard scienti c practice in bibliometric and scientometric research (see Donthu et al., 2021; Zupic & Čater, 2015), which emphasizes aggregate, data-driven evaluation of publication patterns rather than selective citation of source documents. Directly referencing each analyzed article would compromise methodological neutrality and obscure the study’s purpose—to provide an objective, quantitative overview of the
journal’s intellectual and institutional trajectory. Instead, citation analysis, co-authorship mapping, and keyword network modeling collectively capture the intellectual in uence of individual contributions, allowing the analysis to remain empirically rigorous, ethically transparent, and
fully aligned with the epistemological principles of metascientific inquiry."
