![[...] it was at this point that he saw someone playing Bloodborne. At first sight? ‘I thought it was a very boring game!’ he laughs. [...] The person playing would just die and die and would have to repeat the same section over and over. ‘I was like, why are they going through this?’ [...] But there is a huge difference between watching Bloodborne and playing it, and as soon as Shimhaq got a PS4 and his own copy? ‘I would say that game completely transformed me.’ Shimhaq was consumed by Bloodborne, but he didn’t just want to play it. ‘I wanted to draw it!’ he exclaims. ‘I was completely mesmerized by the issue of Bloodborne. I was completely taken in by the dark, Gothic things that I wanted to draw.’

![I tend to completely over-complicate everything. MagicaVoxel has a limit of 1024 by 1024 voxels, so you cannot go past that point. I never can go for an incredibly tall building [...]. So I’m really constrained to that cube that I have. At first it was like [working with LEGO], literally block-by-block building. But then I would put so much time in and craft little high-detailed asset packs, like bundles, for myself. So then every time I wanted to play around I would just use those. For example I now had arches, I had domes, I had walls, I had pillars, so I was just playing with those. I wouldn’t have to build from scratch anymore after I had those things. It became easier.

![Was [Bloodborne’s] unusually piecemeal way of telling its story – accomplished not through filmic cutscenes or dialogue as in other games, but instead through short item descriptions that are not only deeply ambiguous but often contradictory – merely masking a fundamentally incoherent plot? Was its spatially disjunctive gameworld genuinely surreal or just shoddily constructed? And if the game’s notoriously challenging boss fights – on which I might spend hours, if not days, failing repeatedly – were ‘tough but fair,’ as Souls advocates often claim, then why were my enemies able to hit me through walls?
