At a talk about the demographic decline in Japan and the speakers are throwing around projections about what things will look like in 2100... It's a weird contrast to listening to podcasts predicting an intelligence explosion/singularity in the next 15 years. www.astralcodexten.com/p/slightly-a...

No. I envision that if you have untrusted code you run it in a different process from where you store your secrets. In practice most people trust their dependencies and this idea of malicious, un-sandboxed dependencies is fiction.

*shrug* if getting real security is too idealistic, I don't think you're already doomed and no Node API choices can change that.

Domenic Denicola @domenic.me · 25/10/2023
I don't think it's good to claim things would be more secure if this same-process free for all nature was hidden better. If you want security, use process boundaries.

Domenic Denicola @domenic.me · 25/10/2023
Remember that any memory in the same process is already accessible to anything else in the process. So indeed this doesn't look like a security issue to me.

This gym has reached the stage in its lifecycle where they realize their original matched set of squat racks is not enough, so they start pulling in mismatched and smaller ones wherever there's free floor space.

Some apps (e.g. Facebook Messenger) will force-reload. This seems good. Even better would be if they force-reloaded themselves in the background, after checking that I had no unsaved state in the DOM.

I have a number of long-running apps in pinned tabs. It's interesting seeing how many of them fail to do an SPA nav (usually with infinite loading spinners), when you come back to them after a few days. I suspect the issue is server-client version skew.

It would have cost ~$237 extra to get everything except the motherboard from Amazon (the motherboard is out of stock there). Maybe I should have done that for ease of payment and potential returns. We'll see...

Total cost looks to be about $180 more in Japan that it would be in the US. I hear there are some electronics tariffs that cause this. What can you do.

Buying these parts required signing up for three different Japanese PC part sites, which was... an experience. I bounced off several more that wouldn't accept my credit card when trying to buy the CPU, and finally found one that used Amazon Pay. One store will be getting a bank transfer 🙃

The next generation or two of models really does seem key. If we get something that jumps from "intern programmer" to "senior programmer", or from good at synthesis and analysis to good at novel scientific research, then we're in for a wild ride: at least steam engine or internet-level disruption.

Spain's fertility rate is ... lower than Japan's? (1.23 births/woman vs. 1.34). I guess there's some other explanation for why there are so many more ill-behaved kids in cafes/restaurants/public transit...

What made it so good? A bit hard to say, but I'd gesture at how they would jump straight into the parts of metaphysics that would be engaging to a lay audience, while still probing those parts with some depth. Their at-times contrasting opinions came out to play, which made it extra fun.

This is cool. Caltech (my alma mater) was worried that the requirement on high school students to take calculus/physics/chemistry was bad for DEI. So they added an alternative path: Khan Academy, or test out using AP/IB exams. Same standards upheld, but more opportunities to meet them. 👍

Caltech is dropping requirements for high school calculus, chemistry and physics courses for students without access to them and will offer other ways to demonstrate knowledge in those fields.

Observables are to event subscriptions as promises are to callbacks: first-class objects you can transform, pass around, and build on top of. @domfarolino.com and @benlesh.bsky.social are looking to make them a standard part of the web platform, and I'm optimistic about their chances!
