So let me get this straight, the Trump administration is going into a tax/business/legal battle with Harvard University? Isn’t that literally the best school in the entire world for law and business?

Just remember, every new lint rule you add is just another reason everyone should hate you. That’s right, you, the engineer that added 10–20 additional lint rules on top of the defaults, after enabling all the built-in rules. Everyone hates you. Even your immediate family. You’re the worst.

"Micro optimization" is an overused term. If someone's doing some hard-to-read trickery to eek out some performance that probably doesn't matter? Sure. "micro optimization" If someone wrote readable, more efficient code? That's just better code, not a "micro optimization".

✨Heads up! Observables are shipping natively to a browser near you soon! Huge thank you and congrats to @domfarolino.com ❤️ I've helped / worked on / watched this through different standards bodies for more than 10 years now. ☠️ (I'm going to have a lot of work now to adapt RxJS to this 😅)

"Good code is self commenting" 🙄 Sure. But even perfect code can't always tell you WHY it's doing what it's doing. Now with AI assistants, they're not going to git blame, and read PRs and issues to know the "whys" ...but they can read inline comments and jsdocs.

I'd kill for greenfield work. But the money is in maintaining 5+ year old, neglected spaghetti for very productive spaghetti farmers. The real reason to work on OSS is just to have a nice place of your own to enjoy coding.

I'm not sure why I never realized this, but it makes sense. JSX doesn't treat new lines in text the same way that the browser interprets them in HTML text content It's just interesting, in HTML the outcomes below would be the same.

This is the first oil painting I've finished in 25 years. A long overdue gift for my parents. Although there's a lot to improve, I've never been happier with a painting. I'm not really an "artist" anymore, but a hobbyist. So I'll take it

Wrapping setState in startTransition will prevent 100% of the wasted renders for the old state. The problem is the unnecessary synchronous setState, not the number of renders.

Coding and education about coding are completely changing. You can literally have Claude or ChatGPT walk you through best practices and how-tos in nearly anything code-related. Personalized. Free. Interactive. Directly in the codebase you care about. How could online tutorials compete?

Social media has ruined web dev the EXACT same way that it ruined politics. If there were elections in tech, it would be down to a few very popular but completely unqualified candidates who would each have their followers believing they were the "best", and then we'd elect a moron.

I'm still dying for #TypeScript to implement a feature that allows better messages for invalid types found with meta programming. Rather that "does not match type 'never'" or whatever happens now. Like this proposal: github.com/microsoft/Ty...
github.com
Proposal: new "invalid" type to indicate custom invalid states · Issue #23689 · microsoft/TypeScript
Proposal A new invalid type that is not assignable to or from any other types. This includes not being assignable to or from any or never. It probably shouldn't even be assignable to invalid itself...

#TypeScript PSA: If you're using `for..of` to do all of your iteration, you don't need to pass/type things as Array, use Iterable! `for..of` does iteration, so any Iterable will work. Passing `Item[]` here would be a unnecessarily restrictive:

90% of what people are building with AI is useless or silly, where they took about 15 minutes to write a silly prompt and added some storage to the system. That said, it's still better than "Web 3" where 99% of it was useless and silly, but they spent years working on it.

protobuf, and .proto files are too low-resolution to be the "source of truth" for generated types for other languages. Letting backend developers lean so hard on those for so long was a mistake. .proto files should be generated from strongly defined languages, not the other way around.

One of the things I like about the tech community here on BlueSky is that I haven’t seen as much self promotion. At least maybe the grifters haven’t figured out the algorithm here. Twitter was so bad I nearly walked away from it.

AI coding helpers still stink at assisting large refactors, sadly. They speed things up a little, but I'd like it to step through changes and have me validate and apply them over and over. For example, to convert a whole codebase from JS to TS, which isn't always easy.

I'm very impressed by Microsoft Edge's built-in shopping features. If you browse to an item on a retail site, Edge will give you price trend information and prices for other retailers! Super handy, IMO.

Only semi-related, but a common difference I see between real world usage of interfaces vs type aliases Always prefer to use properties with function types, not methods Methods are bivariant even with --strictFunctionTypes www.typescriptlang.org/play/?target...

After reading responses, I'm going to stick with defaulting to interfaces. It's the TS team recommendation. Even working on a TS library in a monorepo with 100,000+ targets, I never once saw a reopened interface cause an issue. I *have*, however, seen degraded TS performance from overuse of `type`.
