Following on from last week Today's #HistNursing #Badge is again #Edgware with the same central shield. But it's for 'Edgware-Hendon District School of Nursing' 💙 #DistrictNurses Browse more rcn.access.preservica.com/archive/ @rcnhistory.bsky.social #HistMed

Divided in three 'rectangles, the left is white, the middle (point upwards) is red and the right is white. The top left white section has a red sillouette of a windmill (often used as a local image for the nearby area of Mill Hill). on the right white section is a red silloutette of two crossed quills - a sign of learning and study.
The shield is surrounded by a pale green enamel rim inscribed in capital letters 'Edware-Hendon District School of Nursing'

A silver with blue enamel horizontal bar inscribed 'Edgware General Hospital; sits above a round silver medal, joined by a short chain link. The silver medal has a white and red enamel shield. Divided in three 'rectangles, the left is white, the middle (point upwards) is red and the right is white. The top left white section has a red sillouette of a windmill (often used as a local image for the nearby area of Mill Hill). on the right white section is a red silloutette of two crossed quills - or at least the nibs. turns out crossed quills are often a sign of learning and study - much befitting a nursing school. A bit of internet sleuthing took me a long way from my first guess which was - is that a propeller from Hendon? (of course not - definitely windmill sails). And is that some sort of medical needle? (of course not - definitely nibs). So now we know

Gold oval medal. The top half has the Doncaster Royal infirmary heraldic crest in profile. Two rampant lions are facing eachother, in between is a sheild on which is Doncaster castle with a crown above it. Under is s scroll inscribed (but not legible). The bottom half is inscribed with 'Ruth Edith Davy The Best Nurse of the Year'. I do like that she wasn't just 'Nurse of the Year' but 'The Best'. It would have been worn on a ribbon around the neck.

Today's #HistNursing #Badge is #Doncaster Royal Infirmary The origins of DRI go back to 1792. It later became Britain’s first purpose-built District General Hospital & developed into a key teaching hospital. Find out more www.dbth.nhs.uk/wp-content/u... @rcnhistory.bsky.social
A silver bar with 'Doncaster Royal Infirmary, raised profile using capital letters. Below this hangs a silver enamel badgs, featuring a red cross on a white background - which can also be viewed as a white castle with a tower on either side (the tower can be viewed as a scroll). The top of the badge incorporates a silver bird with a crown in its talons - the bottom incorporates a laurel wreath. If this sounds complicated - it is! The Nursing School was established in 1925. By 1930 this badge was designed by a Doncaster art student Edith Hooper - so it's a bit more abstract than some of the more traditional heraldic badges.

oval bronze badge. The design created with a raised profile. The outer rim inscribed "issued by the Queen's Nursing Institute" with a crown at the top. the centre of the oval is cut out, with an intertwined capital "N" and "D" within the oval (for District Nursing). the badge was issued to nurses trained by the QNI who had passed their exams and became QNI members. They were known as Queen's Nurses. It may nomt seem it, but having a national network of specialist non-hospital nurses was revolutionary!
