If I had a nickel for every time I had to write an obituary for one of my parents, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but is the maximum number of nickels one can gain from such a strange form of monetary compensation. www.bakermccullough.com/obituaries/t...

There's something almost magical about the earnestness and loyalty on display by the Riders of Rohan, the men of Gondor, the Rangers, Pippin and Merry's dedication to their respective lords. In turn, there's something incredibly menacing about "the evil has come and so the sun is gone" as a concept.

Alright gang it's The Return of the King time. Book first, as per tradition. Reiterating for the newcomers that this is the first time I've reread/rewatched the series, been about 25 years for the books, and movies since theaters. First impressions - love the parallels between Merry and Pippin.

In 1899, someone built this church pew by hand. Somewhere between then and now, it was painted pink and blue. Now it's in my studio and it's about to become something new. Stay tuned for perhaps my most unhinged art project yet. #art #artist #painting

All that being said, this movie is clearly the one I remember the most lines from, for whatever reason. "What do your elf eyes see?" "Looks like meat's back on the menu" "Po-ta-toes" "They're taking the hobbits to Isengard" All in the first like 30 minutes. This must have played on tv the most.

Am I a better screenwriter than Peter Jackson? Probably not. But I do know I'd rather see Ian McKellen weasel his way out of being accused of horse thievery (while very clearly doing horse thievery) for fifteen minutes over watching that slimy dude with no eyebrows get pervy with the King's neice.

Christopher J. Teuton @dogtreestudios.itch.io · 13/09/2026
The beauty of the Rohan setup in the book is that all the Wormtongue nonsense happened offscreen. We just get one mention of it early on, then Gandalf pretends to bring the horse back and fixes Theodin pretty instantly. That would have been fine and we would have had more time for better scenes.

Is the giant spider in the book kind of dumb and useless? Yes. Would it have been cooler to cut between the battle of Helm's Deep and the giant spider fight at the end of this movie? Also yes. Is this movie better for lacking a giant spider at all? No.

Christopher J. Teuton @dogtreestudios.itch.io · 13/09/2026
The funniest scene in the book - Gandalf, Aragorn, Theodin, etc. coming to Isengard to find it already trashed with Merry and Pippin drunk at the doors - is totally missing, because it hasn't happened yet in the movie's chronology. There's no final showdown with Saruman and an orb & no giant spider.

Okay, so: Did not enjoy this book-to-film double feature as much as Fellowship, but at least they fixed the pacing. However, it's done by making some sweeping and (unnecessary?) changes to the order of things, including having Merry and Pippin convince Treebeard to give them something to do I guess?
100
Christopher J. Teuton @dogtreestudios.itch.io · 13/09/2026
If nothing else, I'm excited to watch the movie because I know they probably jump between stories at the fun parts, and just like I did with Fellowship I'm excited to see what they cut for time. HOW MUCH TREE LORE WE GOT? WHY DO I HAVE THIS INGRAINED MEMORY OF THE PHRASE TAKING HOBBITS TO ISENGARD??

Christopher J. Teuton @dogtreestudios.itch.io · 13/09/2026
Death Proof was a fine B movie, but imagine if it was the lead-up to Planet Terror instead of being the follow-up. Frodo, Sam, and Gollum are the 90 minute character study after the rest of the Fellowship and Helm's Deep give us the insane action and random trailers for other events from Rodriguez.

Christopher J. Teuton @dogtreestudios.itch.io · 13/09/2026
The Two Towers remains a fantastic (if horribly paced) book 25 years later, but I remember on my first read-through thinking the big spider boss fight was silly and it's still silly now. In retrospect, this can very much be called a "Grindhouse" scenario where Frodo's story would play better first.

Everyone has said Fellowship of the Ring in the best in the trilogy but the amount of [my own] religious truths about the world delivered by Treebeard really make The Two Towers pop for me. This Ent is The Lorax after about 2,000 years and it's exactly what you'd expect from that.

Had my say ec.europa.eu/info/law/bet...
Generative AI is a scourge on the world as a whole and the creative sector specifically. It is anti-creativity cynically masquerading as accessibility, rampant theft under the guise of democratising knowledge, erasure of information and a destructive homogenising of the world around us. It can do a small number of very specific things well, a large number of things badly and a lot of things not at all, yet it is being pushed as panacea and god by grifters and liars. The ecological and social impacts are enormous and it is criminally irresponsible to keep forging ahead with this terrible technology. We are in a climate emergency and every new data centre put up for this stuff is a slap in the face of humanity and our shared future. It is not progress, it is regression on a truly ludicrous scale, and every day we don't actively fight it is a day that we could have saved some of our children but instead condemned them to a burning planet where knowledge and creativity are actively set aside in favour of a beige slop and we learn nothing, make nothing, and do nothing. I for one do not wish to live in a world where we sit and stare while machines churn out content for other machines to consume until the burning land and rising sea ends us all, and I will resist every attempt to drag us towards that future in the name of "progress".

UPDATE: I asked the kids and consensus is "they look like puppets, like wood" and "it's cute" and "can I have a Nintendo Switch 2 for Christmas?" and "that fairy sounds pretty" and "is there a Link puppet" and "is there a - who is the that one - is there a deku shrub puppet baby?" and "ew eyeball"

I'm most interested in Ocarina of Time's apparent fascination with a more logically constructed world. A floating platform is replaced with a crumbling bridge. A ladder suspended by nothing is held in place by a stone mechanism. I'm curious to see if the whole world abides by this design.

It's wild seeing so many grown-ass adults continue the time-honored tradition of being FUCKING WEIRD about Zelda graphics when the target audience (my seven-year-old son and four-year-old daughter) are gonna talk about how excited they are for this game every day between now and Christmas

Wild that my two of my favorite series of all time (GTA, Zelda) are releasing games of this scale within the same month. Teenage me would never believe it possible.
