I am in Cap Haitien interviewing people deported from the United States. I have been doing this kind of work for almost a decade and it literally does not get more dire than this. People have lost everything they built in the U.S. and are terrified and have no place to go or way to live.

Someone should let Trump know about this “colorblind” thing. He seems confused about the subject.

becoming a vulgar rawlsian. the veil of ignorance isn't perfect, but 'is this how you would design things if *you* thought you might end up here?' is a test that way too many people fail. on everything from criminal justice to public transit, across the ideological spectrum.

My guess is that the wealthy are uniquely drawn to ideas of biological essentialism because they are flattering to people at the top of the social hierarchy. Ralph Waldo Emerson touched on (and indeed was an example of) this is his book English Traits

The term that's needed to capture the point behind this satire is *proportionality.* If we analyze the pathologies of the present political agenda through the lens of political judgment, the problem is a systematic failure of opinion-makers to respond proportionally to the issues of the day.

Maybe some of those "why are you campaigning with an antisemite?" questions could go to Republicans backed by a Sieg Heiling white nationalist. The silence is especially deafening because Musk's involvement helped Republicans lose in WI in 2025, so the press even has its preferred horserace frame.

I’m sympathetic to the idea that political ideas aren’t cut and dry expressions of physics but so far has anyone even attempted to defend the view that “woke 1” was a more repressed set of norms than what immediately precede it. Do people what 9/11 era politics was like? Repression! Lots!

Yes. The missing link of contemporary politics isn’t wokeness it’s the revival of anti egalitarian ideas among America’s elites

many "centrists" agree with Cofnas and when they complain about "wokeness" and "political correctness" they often mean that they are not allowed to express this stupid idea — that black people in smart-guy jobs shouldn't be there and should be like, sprinters and jazz musicians instead — explicitly

I think part of the pundit crack-up has been that they missed the big call of their lifetimes about which was the bigger threat to America: wokeness or authoritarianism. And rather than admitting that, they are doubling down on wokeness, while ignoring an authoritarianism that does not threaten them

I think assessing the impact of social movements outside electoral politics is inherently difficult because we lack public metrics. We can count the number of candidates who join the freedom caucus or the DSA. All attempts to quantify campus woke have been to my mind deeply underwhelming.

I also think that though no one wants to say it the emergence of an openly white supremacist government substantially validated the “wokes” such that now we are all trying to figure out a face saving way to admit they were for the most part correct

American political pundits have one (1) narrative about politics. That Democrats are too socially liberal. Everything must be put in that frame even foreign governments.
