The Trump admin wants to cut the NSF's budget by 57%. In terms of directorates, EDU and ENG would see the biggest cuts at 75%, while MPS is looking at a ~67% cut. The proposal also defunds nearly all postdoc programs and slashes the NSF GRFP budget by 55%. More here: cen.acs.org/policy/resea...

Why is the cut to NSF is so steep? The $5 billion, 57% cut goes well beyond other science agencies (40% for NIH, 14% for DOE science). It's more than the numbers from the Cruz report, which (erroneously) estimated only 2 billion over 4 years went to "DEI" science. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

NEW: Starting May 5, NSF will implement an across-the-board 15% indirect cost rate (mirroring policies at DOE, NIH) Also, NSF staff expect 341 additional terminations today, bringing the total number of terminations to ~1,380.

Effective May 5, 2025, NSF will apply a standard indirect cost rate not to exceed 15% to all
grants and cooperative agreements awarded to IHEs for which indirect costs are allowable.1 The
awardee is authorized to determine the appropriate rate up to this limit.
