See that vinegar jug? It was given to me by my late father. His grandmother gave it to his mother. She passed it on to him: a peculiar bequest with a history.

The temperance movement posed a serious threat to apple growers. Their first move? Hire an ad agency.

You know the slogans. 'As American as apple pie.' 'An apple a day keeps the doctor away.'

Apples make good vinegar. Good for pickling. Good for cleaning. Look: we'll even sell it in decorative jars.

A vinegar jar survived the sinking of RMS Titanic. A lot of history for 'an odorous aqueous solution of diluted acetic acid' (so Wikipedia).

Keep in mind: what we bequeath the future is our past. Be like the vinegar jar: preserve the good stuff.

#BirdOfTheDay theme is #Awkward I don't know how awkward it is for the nuthatch but it looked really weird to me.
A nuthatch on the trunk of a black walnut tree. The bird is sort of sticking straight out from the trunk, facing forward and staring right at the camera.

The press coverage of the Academy of Natural Sciences has gone from "Oh how sad" to sounding like a hostage negotiation. Which maybe sounds bad, but elected leaders, the press, the people online, all saying "You don't have to do this, man" is better than mourning. share.inquirer.com/YTQg0s

The Academy's 150-year-old building faces roughly $150 million in deferred maintenance costs. While that may seem daunting, it is not insurmountable.

you hear the word loaded / and a sensory constellation / is lit The Thomas Lux poem I keep coming back to
THE VOICE YOU HEAR WHEN YOU READ SILENTLY

is not silent, it is a speaking-
out-loud voice in your head: it is spoken,
a voice is saying it
as you read. It's the writer's words,
of course, in a literary sense
his or her "voice" but the sound
of that voice is the sound of your voice.
Not the sound your friends know
or the sound of a tape played back
but your voice
caught in the dark cathedral
of your skull, your voice heard.
by an internal ear informed by internal abstracts
and what you know by feeling,
having felt. It is your voice.
saying, for example, the word "barn"
that the writer wrote
but the "barn" you say
is a barn you know or knew. The voice
in your head, speaking as you read,
never says anything neutrally--some people
hated the barn they knew,
some people love the barn they know
so you hear the word loaded
and a sensory constellation
is lit: horse-gnawed stalls,
hayloft, black heat tape wrapping
a water pipe, a slippery
spilled chirrr of oats from a split sack,
the bony, filthy haunches of cows...
And "barn" is only a noun--no verb
or subject has entered into the sentence yet!
The voice you hear when you read to yourself
is the clearest voice: you speak it
speaking to you.

                                                  --THOMAS LUX

after the Wall came down we booked
a quick winter trip to the East
in unfriendly Weimar the sights
were closed for the holidays
Gotha was magical, snow and frost
on the Orangerie, the Zeppelin port
not open for visitors: on past Erfurt

arriving on the train in Colditz to find
every single door in the place shut tight
a ghost town, not even a coffee shop
we climbed the hill beside the legendary castle

there's a problem with metaphors:
sermons & hymns used to talk about
sailing through stormy seas
familiar in the age of wooden ships
no more
too many office workers in the pews these days
perhaps it is because I live too far from a coast
that I don't relate to the metaphor
I mean
driving down a back road during a flash-flood warning...

'Upon a narrow, winding road
Thou'rt driving, lo, flash flood ahead,
The Heavenly Weatherman has said:
Drive on! drive on! drive on!'

nah, doesn't have the same ring to it
& it's bad advice, too

'Toddlers like to explore.' Oh, yeah? Do you know any toddlers?

To a two-year-old everything unfamiliar is alarming and needs to be yelled at. The word of the year is No. For a good reason: everything is trying to kill you. Especially other two-year-olds.

Me at two: in the backyard by myself. Not an adult in sight. On the other side of the fence: another two-year-old. Holding a lit sparkler. From the gleam in his eye, a future domestic terrorist.

It was at this point that I made an important discovery: grownups had their uses. I ran for help as the grass caught fire.

I'll give you 'explore'...
