Nobody tells you that your enjoyment of music is 100% about context. It doesn’t matter what any of the music sounds like. The only thing that matters is you and what you need To hear at any given timec. There is no “good” music.

My family has this saying -- I think it goes back to something my great grandmother used to say? A holdover from the old country. It's interesting -- it's funny -- but, well, roughly translated it basically goes, "remember we must die."

I trust a particular thread of friends to recieve unsolicited "I have a new theory of genre" texts every few months; "genre is ritual" "genre is family' etc and @chloroformtea.bsky.social's idea that genre starts as a relationship to poetic uncertainty made me groan out loud while doing the dishes.

My fave goodreads review of FHotLG is the first 19 words of a two-star review that my algorithm (does goodreads use algorithms like this?) puts near the top. It's perfect: the story line is God, and the book is God's empty home, a lot where Cedar Hawk sees the literal sign that is the book's title.
screenshot of a goodreads review, two stars:

"As I read 'Future Home of the Living God,' I kept wondering when the storyline would reveal itself -- when the necessary background information would be told so that the story would make some sense to me. Events happen almost at random, and there's not a sense of ovearching story other than some religious dreams and unresolved imaginings."

Mother is one of FHotLG's most upsetting experiences in a book that has like six of these. Reading Erdrich's Mother as prescient of AI feels condescending but there is something about her that rhymes very fashionably with the (welcome) M John Harrison renaissance. She is from a Horror story.
PAGE TEXT:

"As I am putting together the Thoughts page, my screen goes dark swirly. This time she floats slowly into focus from the depths.

'Hello, dear. How are you?'

Her full cheeks are cement gray, this time set hard around her smile.

'Mother is thinking all about you. Would you like to tell me about your day?'

I shut down my computer

My hands are trembling. I push myself away from the dark screen. I can't get up. Can't move. The phone starts ringing, and it won't quick. It rings continually for ten minutes, then falls silent for a moment, starts again. Twenty-five minutes after the last ring. there is a knock at the door. That is the length of time it takes for your father to get from his apartment to my house--"

Cedar Hawk's stepdad talks about how a newly ending world is a white-person idea, that those like the colonized Ojibwe have been living in post-apocalyptic lives for a long time. So who is our (white people's) colonizer/genocider? FHotLG's answer is as vague as a figure in a fogged mirror.
PAGE TEXT:

"dates. Birth. Death. And below that a line that says 'She served the future.'

I step back from the wall of martyrs.

DECEMBER 6
During mandatory Watching hour, we sit on a wobbly plastic chairs crammed together in the viewing room. Mother is the only channel. Sometimes she brings on Papa, a sunken-eyed man with stiff white side-parted hair and the same lipless hatch of angry whitened teeth. Mother surges into view, round cake-pan face, busy calm.

Offred bets her survival (and that of normal life) on her 2nd Wave anger. Erdrich's Cedar Hawk, by contrast, waits on the end of the world in an innocence so mannered it is quickly revealed as sainthood. She does not have faith that God will save her, or the world. That is not what Faith is for.
PAGE TEXT:

"'I am the utterance of my name. I sit back in the chair and stare at the white wall. This line of a fragment of the gnostic text 'The Thunder, Perfect Mind,' is the last sentence I wrote before I drove north. It is unlike me to reference writing other than canonical references, and the tractate is troublesome. But I am drawn to the text and have read it so often that I have much of it by memory. 'For I am the first and the last. I am the honored one and the scorned one. I am the whore and the holy one. I am the wife and the virgin.' Perhaps it is the voice, I think, so arrogant and so alive, using antithesis to cause in the reader's mind the romantic dissonance that occurs when one attempts to comprehend the unknowable. 'I am the midwife and she who does not bear. I am the solace of my labor pains. I am the bride and the bridegroom. And it is my husband who begot me. I am the mother of my father...'"

For contrarians like me, Future Home of the Living God's first virtue is that it was initially dismissed as a middling Handmaid's Tale riff by the Netflix-brained critics of 2017. In 2026, Handmaid's Tale reads like a neolib fairytale with its "everything got back to normal" ending. Not FHotLG.
Book page text:

"JANUARY
They say my heart is damaged.

FEBRUARY
My dear son. I know you're going to read this someday. I can tell that you're going to wonder what it was like, in the before.

My parents would tell me things about the world, the way it was before, the way they knew it and loved it although, they always, said this, We didn't know it was heaven.

I would ask them, What was it like, years ago? The real cold, the deep cold?

And they would tell me."

I missed my connecting flight coming home from an east coast funeral and so have just spent a sleepless night in the reddit-liminal tomb of the Denver airport rereading Louise Erdrich's perfect Future Home of the Living God, the only book successfully about climate collapse and (so far) Covid. AMA
Pic of a pet-relief station at Denver International Airport, a tent-sized square of bright green fake grass with a fake rock in one corner, a real hose and spigot in another, and a color photo of a sunny Rocky Mountain fir grove covering a whole wall. A poster featuring a smiling golden retriever and, above them, the word "RELIEF" hangs from an open door in the right foreground.

Every season of Reacher so far has been great, and I understand that they may be avoiding the earlier novels due to their slightly less standalone nature, but every year I'm sad to learn that next season won't be the book where he kills his way through a white supremacist militia camp.

Now that climate change is actually visibly destroying human civilization, the big boys are having all these dysphoric feelings and doubts about if they're really geniuses or not. So they invented a climate change that's easy to solve because it's imaginary. Except they still aren't solving it
