Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu has me captivated. I'm about halfway through. It's a bit surreal. A glimpse of what it must be like to live inside imposed Asian stereotypes.

I'm in pretty much the same situation in North Island Powell River. But the 2025 Carney wave wasn't quite strong enough here and we split the vote.

#fptp really sucks, being forced to vote against the worst rather than vote for the best. How do you guess how the progressives in your region will vote?

My federal riding tends to split almost precisely three ways. Between 2019 and 2025, the winner went from CON to NDP to LIB, and with no riding-level polls, I'm forced to vote strategically based on my best guess about how my neighbours will vote. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Mo...

I feel like we took the wrong path from that crossroad. There's a lot of inertia to counteract before we can slow down and go back. But leaders like Mamdani give me hope that it's still possible.

Will also try to contextualise the results for those not familiar with the finer details of Swedish politics.

Climeworks' Mammoth facility in Iceland removed 675 tonnes of CO₂ in the first half of 2026, almost 6x as much as in 2025. If they keep it up, that'll be 1350 tonnes a year*. That's a time machine that takes us back 1 whole second in a year! 🙄 *Mammoth has a stated capacity of 36,000 tonnes. 🫠

Something that is probably glaringly obvious to chemistry experts, but not to the rest of us, is that CO2 just doesn't go away by itself over many life spans. Every tank of gas that gets burned and ejected into the air is going to stay up there, for a long long time. Heating us in perpetuity.

A doomist narrative might be necessary in order to scare enough people into giving up fossil fuels. Scare them thoroughly first, then give them a little bit of hope, but only if they agree to completely give up carbon. Otherwise they will ignore it (and we will be doomed imho.)

Yup. Although I sort of doubt that the population curve (red line) will look like that. It will probably crash at some point due to famine caused by lack of land that can still grow food, and oceans with fewer fish. Now is not a good time to have babies imho.

In the 16 years we've lived here, we've had 2 apple seedlings grown enough to bear fruit. They show up in the garden where I've added compost, usually they are about 4" tall when I notice them, usually in the spring. This year I put 10 of them in small pots, and recently planted 7 of them.
