I had a feeling recently that seems to be corroborated by chats with colleagues, so I decided to share it here. A lot of systems neuroscientists driven by algorithmic-level questions are going through what looks and feels like a research depression. 🧵 (1/n) 🧠📈 #NeuroAI

(Full disclosure I wasn’t purely algorithm-driven in the first place so maybe I’m missing something 😅)

In that regard, it feels more like a change in the game of studying brain algorithms, rather than a depression. The old game was figuring out the algorithms, the new one is understanding where they come from, why they look the way they do, and how they support complex behavior.

2) if you’re driven by algorithm-level questions, but ok with the idea that brain algorithms emerge from implementation/computation/environment interactions, then it feels like a good time to be in this business.

I’ve been trying to figure out how I feel about this, and might agree, but with two caveats: 1) if you’re driven by questions *connecting* implementation, algorithm, and computation (for lack of better terms), and situating them in the environment, it seems like a good time to be in this business.

I kinda get why people hate on fussy philosophical stuff, but on the other hand don't you think we live in a time where it'd be especially helpful to have rigorous conversations about things like personhood, meaning in life, the point of art, the point of pure mathematics, & operationalizing ethics?

There’s a Ted Chiang story where AI has a parallel AI-only scientific literature. In that case, AI was doing all the real science and humans were left to pick up the scraps and try to understand what they could… Not sure if I’d prefer that or slopfest.

Yes the important unstated caveat is that just because you can build it doesn’t mean you understand it 🥲. This has come up lately in response to “why do you even need to model, what can you get that we can’t learn from experiments?”

If there are any PhD hopefuls on here, I wanted to share a few thoughts on your timeline for the upcoming admissions cycle, with apps due starting mid-November. What should you be doing right now? ✔️ Generating a list of schools ✔️ Reaching out to possible recommenders 🧵!

Dan Levenstein @dlevenstein.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
My advice has been to reach out to potential PIs to find out which programs lead to their group and what they would recommend for students of their background (and also if they’ll be taking students), but with 5/school this is way too much work for everyone… not sure what to recommend.
120
Dan Levenstein @dlevenstein.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Each program has different requirements, expectations, procedure (eg direct admit vs rotation), and these differ substantially between schools - some require much more potential-PI involvement before app while others expect you apply and then decide PI. Navigating this is super daunting for students

Dan Levenstein @dlevenstein.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
One thing I’m struggling with in how to advise PhD hopefuls in my group is that it’s not just schools, but programs. Many PIs can take students through different programs (eg I can take students through neuro, biophysics, or computational biology).

The superposition of these two studies — both incredible — reflect a snapshot of "one big thing" systems neuroscience has yet to resolve. In mice: 1. Task-related signals are everywhere. 2. Absent large swaths of "everywhere," suprisingly sophisticated learning & behavior remains.

Sadly the answer needs to be justified anew for every problem, and it’s generally on us to justify it. 🥲 Though TBH deciding this and justifying it is half the work of theory/modeling. bsky.app/profile/dlev...

On the Role of Theory and Modeling in Neuroscience
In recent years, the field of neuroscience has gone through rapid experimental advances and a significant increase in the use of quantitative and computational methods. This growth has created a need for clearer analyses of the theory and modeling approaches used in the field. This issue is particularly complex in neuroscience because the field studies phenomena that cross a wide range of scales and often require consideration at varying degrees of abstraction, from precise biophysical interactions to the computations they implement. We argue that a pragmatic perspective of science, in which descriptive, mechanistic, and normative models and theories each play a distinct role in defining and bridging levels of abstraction, will facilitate neuroscientific practice. This analysis leads to methodological suggestions, including selecting a level of abstraction that is appropriate for a given problem, identifying transfer functions to connect models and data, and the use of models themselves as a form of experiment.

We were actually discussing this at a workshop earlier this year. In particular: The dynamics of BTSP actually seem to potentially be counter to a gradient descent mechanism, and more in line with hashing.

I gave a talk in our ISRC CN3 summer school yesterday on computational modelling of learning and memory, at the end I threw in a list of what I consider the big open questions in the the theory of learning in neural circuits. What did I miss??
Slide with title text "Open directions in theory of learning in neural circuits". List of points:
- Does the brain learn by gradient descent? If so, how?
- How are memories stable if synaptic strengths − and brain representations − fluctuate over time?
- How do brains learn continually over a lifetime?
- How do brains learn so efficiently? (In terms of energy, data, wiring constraints)
- Why are synapses so molecularly complex, compared to ANN weights?

Especially when we know (from paired recording datasets, and the observation that Ca-derived spikes are ~10x less frequent than ephys-derived spikes) that not all spikes make observable Ca events. Ca is an interesting/bio-relevant signal itself, why not study it for what it is?
