This is *the* piece. Kate Manne, professor of philosophy at Cornell, speaks truth to the totality of failures at the university — and why students protesting the war in Gaza have faced far harsher consequences than any of the Cornell 7: www.thecut.com/article/what...

What It Feels Like at Cornell Right Now
As a professor at the Ivy League school, Kate Manne has known many, many victims. There’s a palpable feeling on campus, she writes, that this is big.

My team at the NVA Lab has produced a new dashboard for exploring our data on US protests from Jan 2025-May 2026. This snapshot shows the 61k+ protest events (>14.6M+ recorded participants) active in the US since Trump's second inauguration. Link to dashboard in thread.
A platform displaying the data on US protests from the Crowd Counting Consortium. It includes a map of the US with counts of protest events in circular form overlaying the protests' locations. It also includes weekly tallies of protest events and participations, top protest issues, and various filters allowing users to explore events by location, issue, date, political valence, etc. The top of the image shows a total of 61,782 protests with 14,684,201 participants across 55 US states and territories from January 20, 2025 to May 31, 2026.

This election will be a reminder that “people don’t vote based on foreign policy” is most accurate if you mean “people don’t choose candidates based on a comparison of their foreign policy positions.” But voters do respond to the outcomes of foreign policy choices if they are salient.

Imagine accepting these first two sentences from the NYT piece as a normal feature of American life: "What can a laid-off worker over 50 do to get health insurance? Besides staying healthy until Medicare kicks in at age 65, the answer is: Not a lot."

The @washingtonpost.com editorial board somehow manages to blame Carney, not Trump, for Canada's openness to a close alliance with EU. Post editorial board members are welcome to my Intro to IR class anytime.

You're in charge of a war that you're losing, the Houthi are on the march to Riyadh, you've run the Navy ragged, you've lost almost all your bases in the Middle East, you're out of missiles (mostly) that you need in case China steals a march on Taiwan...and you're at a fucking football game.

I have adapted the NYT language: "In an eight-page dissent, Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., joined by Justice Clarence Thomas, wrote that he would have allowed the Trump administration" to do anything it wanted, anytime, anywhere, on any issue.

It feels like how I imagine it felt to make a big deal out of the 30th anniversary of Pearl Harbor in 1971, in the midst of Vietnam with Nixon’s landslide coming. It will always be important. I will never forget. And yet, it’s not the biggest thing we’re dealing with, and hasn’t been in a while.

The thing about the ICE abductions is: it’s not even the case these people are undocumented. A huge percentage are trying or have legally immigrated. I don’t think people understand that.
