Hot take: Hegseth shouldn't be tried in the states come 2029. And no, neither should he be sent to the Hague, though that would be, I guess, acceptable. He should be extradited to Iran.

also, again, someone who thinks differnetly about atatürk's legacy, or is even wrong about atatürk, or *even* insults him, is a slight addressed to him. it is not an attack on you, or turks, or turkey. it is not discrimination, or racism. only a genuinely insane person would believe else.

atatürk has the strongest cult of personality outside of north korea today, and what i've seen from this controversy is that very few turks haven't fallen victim to it. he was, in very many ways, a deeply important figure, and worthy of respect. he also did a lot of really bad things.

moreover, denial of the armenian genocide in turkish historiography became entrenched because of him. it is kemalist myth-making that leads straight to contemporary denialism in today's turkey. so, even if not a genocidaire in his own right, he ended up being pivotal to its denial up to this day.

while atatürk's involvement in the armenian genocide proper (i.e. the ottoman period) is not to be found, he was the leader of the ankara government when it engaged in mass ethnic cleansing against armenians in kars, and against greeks in the west. so he's far from blameless or not controversial.

churchill led britain through its darkest times, and helped save it from the nazis. he was also a genocidaire. washington is the founder of the US, and still is its ideological north star. he was a slaver. brits or yanks don't engage in mass harassment campaigns when you point this out.

This is but a small collection. He has a truly insane fixation with Sánchez, going back more than a decade. Here are a couple more, but there are maybe up to 100 tweets like this.
Siegfried Mureșan tweets:
"#Spain: Socialist election loser #Sanchez ready to form gov with eurosceptics but not with winning @PPopular & @marianorajoy. #irresponsible"Siegfried Mureșan tweets:
"Spanish Prime Minister Pedro #Sanchez has jeopardised enough #Spain's EU Council Presidency.

It is time he recognises his defeat, allows the election winner
@NunezFeijoo @ppopular to govern the country and successfully conclude the Council Presidency.

#EleccionesGenerales"Siegfried Mureșan tweets:
"Sánchez is forming today a government enabled by terrorists and corrupt politicians who only 2 weeks ago would have gone to prison had they entered #Spain. This is the truth.
#Sanchez is a threat to Spanish democracy, he is a threat to European #democracy."Siegfried Mureșan tweets:
"🇪🇸PM Sánchez is trying to burden people of Spain with €94 bn in debt before the general elections. @EU_Commission should not assess this proposal before the vote. Decisions with long-term impact for Spanish people should be made by a legitimate government after the elections."

Siegfried Mureșan, EPP MEP, was just nominated to be Romania's next PM. He will likely fail to gather a majority, leading to a snap election. But *if* he wins, Romania will manage to have a somehow even more zionist government than before, and it will probably cause a diplomatic crisis with Spain.
Siegfried Mureșan tweets:
"Pedro #Sanchez showed his lack of competence in foreign policy during this week’s visit to #Israel.

His mistakes confirm he is unfit for any international post the at the top of an EU institution or at the top of #NATO.

We need leaders who solve problems, not create problems."Siegfried Mureșan tweets:
"In #Spain the real power lies with #Puigdemont. Puigdemont decides, Sanchez just executes."Siegfried Mureșan tweets:

"Former Socialist Prime Minister Zapatero is under criminal investigation for alleged money laundering in the Plus Ultra case linked to the €53M bailout granted under the government of Pedro Sánchez.

Never before in democratic #Spain has a former Prime Minister been under criminal investigation in a corruption case.

Spain is the EU’s fourth-largest economy. The implications for public trust, democratic accountability, and the rule of law cannot be ignored.

The duty of politicians is to manage public money with care and integrity. It is now up to the authorities to investigate this case thoroughly. What we can do as citizens is always stay away from corrupt politicians who mismanage our money."Siegfried Mureșan tweets:
"Mr. #Sanchez, who keeps raising taxes, should know that Spanish people's money is not collected for the government to misuse it.

The
@EU_Commission
 is investigating the #AmnestyLaw.

The
@EUProsecutor
is investigating the #CasoKoldo. And those who are corrupt will pay.

Robert Kraft — who's given millions to pro-Israel orgs like AIPAC — once got a $1M award from Netanyahu for helping stop people from boycotting Israel. "Israel does not have a more loyal friend than Robert Kraft," Netanyahu said. Now, Kraft helps kick Macklemore off Ed Sheeran's tour:
Robert Kraft to Establish a Foundation to Combat Anti-Semitism, BDS, Delegitimization of Israel
Jun 20, 2019 at 03:25 PM
June 20, 2019, Jerusalem - Tonight, the Laureate of the 2019 Genesis Prize Robert Kraft was honored at a gala ceremony in Jerusalem. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Genesis Prize Foundation Chairman Stan Polovets bestowed the award on Kraft in front of an audience of 600 Israeli and international dignitaries.
The $1 million Genesis Prize, dubbed "the Jewish Nobel" by Time Magazine, honors extraordinary individuals for outstanding professional achievement, contribution to humanity, and commitment to Jewish values. Previous honorees include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg; philanthropist and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; actor, producer and peace activist Michael Douglas; and "Fiddler to the world" maestro Itzhak Perlman.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said: "I am delighted to welcome Robert Kraft to the august family of Genesis Prize Laureates. This prestigious award honors Robert's generous lifelong philanthropy, his commitment to the Jewish people, and his love for Israel. It also recognizes his principled stand against anti-Semitism and efforts by our enemies to undermine the State of Israel through BDS and other similar campaigns. Israel does not have a more loyal friend than Robert Kraft."
Kraft previously announced he would forgo the $1 million monetary award so that the funds could be granted to initiatives combating anti-Semitism, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS), and other efforts to delegitimize Israel. This is in line with the tradition established by previous Genesis Prize Laureates, who have "re-gifted" their awards to philanthropic causes they support.

New: Macklemore says Robert Kraft — who owns Gillette Stadium, where Macklemore & Ed Sheeran were to perform later this month — called Sheeran. Kraft rallied other owners together behind an ultimatum for Sheeran: if Macklemore stays on the tour, you won't be allowed in our venues.

I'm not sure how to start this. So I'm going to speak from the heart and share the truth. Ed Sheeran and his team have made the decision to remove me from The Loop tour.
But before I get into it, I want to say something that should be obvious. In this moment I think it matters. I am not a victim. Ed Sheeran is not a victim. Pink is not a victim. We have careers, money, opportunities, safety and audiences around the world. Whatever consequences any of us face for what we say, we get to go home to our families.

The victims are the Palestinian people. The men, women and children who have been killed, starved, displaced and forced to live through unimaginable violence. More than 20,000 children have been killed in Gaza alone. People are being killed today, and people will be killed tomorrow. I want to make sure that as I tell this story, we don't lose sight of that.

Ed is my friend. I've known him for 13 years. We've shared late nights, studio sessions and stages. He has this infectious magic about him that I've grown to love. I consider him a brother. And because of that, we've had some difficult conversations this past week. The type of talks rooted in love and respect for one another that still end in a place of fundamental disagreement. Nothing I'm writing here is out of spite or because I want to tear down his character. But as I told Ed multiple times on the phone, our friendship can't change my responsibility to tell the truth about what happened.

Last Monday, in the middle of all the media attention surrounding Pink and what I said at MetLife, Ed told me that Robert Kraft called him. We were scheduled to play Gillette Stadium later this month, which is owned by the Kraft Group. Ed told me that Kraft said I would not be allowed to perform in his stadium. Ed also told me that Kraft had rallied some of the other
stadium owners and collectively they gave him an ultimatum: if Macklemore stays on the tour, you will not be allowed to play in our venues.

Ed was in …What I said at MetLife I have been saying on stages around the world for almost three years. So why is it an issue now? Because now I'm sharing a stage with one of the biggest artists in the world, in some of the biggest stadiums in America. At a certain level of exposure, "Free Palestine" becomes too much of a risk. If I kept doing the shows, saying Free Palestine, with Ed implicitly supporting it, the crowd getting loud and showing undeniable support for Palestinian liberation, what artist might speak out next? The stage becomes resistance. Maybe that's why this time it became so important to silence me.

And one of the most effective ways to enforce that silence has been to weaponize the accusation of antisemitism. Antisemitism is real. And that is exactly why the word matters too much to be used as a shield against criticism of the Israeli state. When criticizing Israel, opposing Zionism or saying "Free Palestine" gets conflated with hatred of Jewish people, it doesn't protect Jewish people. It protects Israel from accountability.

I hope this isn't the end of my relationship with Ed.
Thirteen years of friendship doesn't disappear because of one painful disagreement. I hope we both continue listening, studying what is happening in Palestine and wrestling with what neutrality means in a moment like this. My door will always be open to continuing that conversation.

When my brother Omar was doing the subtitles for the video I posted from MetLife, I thanked him. He told me there's a phrase in Arabic:
لا شكر على واجب
"La shukra ala wajeb." There is no thanks for a duty.
That stayed with me. Because that's what this has become for me and millions of others around the world. A duty. Not something deserving of praise or gratitude. Not brave. Human.

Who is winning the internet, who is getting canceled, who gets to play the stadium and who doesn't, all of it becomes so small when held against what we are actually witnessing in Gaza and the West Bank. An entire people be…

There's been additional breakdown, but we shouldn't overstate it: conservatives and their media allies have been full of shit on "policy" my whole life, and the question is how much they get away with it. This Laffer curve bullshit is from 2007, and yes that's the same Kevin Hassett.
WSJ chart on the Laffer curve; mathematically, there's no relationship between corporate taxes and revenue, but they pretended there was one by hand-drawing a curve way outside 20+ countries so it can make a spurious connection from UAE (outlier, no tax) to Norway (outlier, highest corp tax) to blob of UK/France/US.
