Sometimes you're writing something and a truly terrible take on readership appears out of nowhere that fits perfectly with what you're writing, so you quote it as a counterexample, pan it, and move on. Humanities in real time!

OK one more: knowledge-making should be actively divorced from the culture of stardom and celebrity that sometimes builds up in academic circles.

If you have money to invite scholars to give talks on campus, you don't *have to* get the star people. Invite early career people! I have done it many times and it's a great way to boost people's careers. You can also invite non-star people who are also doing great work!

Adjacent point: even when it's online, organizing a talk is work, and we may as well acknowledge our colleagues' labor by attending the talks they organize. And on top of that, we may even learn something at the talk!

Finally, inviting non-star academics/early career people helps instill in people a culture of solidarity and one that does not celebrate *only* the big names. I know we're all ultra busy, but it's worth going to a talk for the sake of it, not because of the cache of the speaker.

Also, if you have no money, academic zoom talks are still 💯 *invited talks* and that looks great on people's CVs! 💫 Many people will accept talks if you cover the costs, or even for free if it's online! People may do it for a parking pass and a sandwich lunch!

Upcoming readings and events for my novel Alice Sees Ghosts!
International Booker Prize-winning translator, Daisy Rockwell, on tour in the US this fall with her new novel, _Alice Sees Ghosts_.

“A gripping saga that excavates the dark, all too human, secrets of a family straddling two continents, _Alice Sees Ghosts_ combines cold psychological probing with deep compassion; pathos with humour.” — Geetanjali Shree.
