She feels a twinge that tightens her throat. The comment is a reminder that the only reason she’s here is because he chose to bring her with him, and he's a resistance fighter fleeing the city the Empire just occupied. Likely he only planned for enough supplies to get himself to his rendezvous point, and now he has to share them with her.

The twinge is replaced with a more sullen and familiar stubbornness, resisting the thought that she should feel guilt for a choice he made about her.

It's almost too much, what he's doing to her. Speaking so reassuringly, as if he's certain of this outcome. Projecting this confidence that everything will be okay. She didn't want to think about Narshe either, or what would come after. He's forced her to, and it's yet more fuel for her sullen resentment.

"I don't expect patience," she responds, lifting her chin. "I expect them to want as much information as I can provide."

"And they will. And they'll be impatient about it. But, look," and he gives her what he probably thinks is a reassuring smile, "I'll try to be there when they do. You don't have to do this alone."

She frowns. This attempt to give her encouragement is confusing her, but he seems to expect it to help. "I am—was—a general," she reminds him, her words tripping over the correct tense. "I don't need to be cheered on while giving a report, no matter how hostile the audience."

Besides, she doesn't like the way he tries to soothe her. He's too damned perceptive, and she hates that already, but these attempts to give her reassurance are unnerving her. His frequent apologies, too. She doesn't like the way he does this, doesn't like all the softening of the edges she uses to find her way through social interaction. She deals in simple communication, the receipt and delivery of commands, statements with well-defined purpose, and anything that blurs those stark lines or introduces unnecessary emotion only interferes with her ability to keep herself centered within them. He may think he's helping her when he makes these overtures of concern, but it's only increasing her uncertainty, and she resents the loss of any of her remaining self-confidence.

So fun fact for people not entrenched in fish lore, Tristol's story is also the origin story for one of the fish you can catch in the proximity of Eulmore, the Red Hammerhead. You can even get a blacksmith hammer from it just like how you get a brush from Tristol! #ShadowbringersSpoilers

Zin's tolerance of making eye contact varies a lot. Generally speaking she's got a bit of neurodivergent "eye contact can make me uncomfortable" going on, and when she's anxious it gets worse. But when she is Locked In as a Dark Knight she will 100% be unsettlingly intense about it. #zinlore
